When we treat our fellow Americans as enemies, we lose friendships, and thus love and happiness. That’s exactly what’s happening. I already cited a poll showing that a sixth of Americans have stopped talking to a family member or close friend b/c of the 2016 election.

1. I'll be talking w/ @ArthurBrooks on Monday's radio show about his terrific new book "Love Your Enemies; How Decent People Can Save America from the Culture of Contempt" amazon.com/Love-Your-Enem… But as wonderful as it is in its aspirations, I will have to press Arthur hard.
2. B/c the problems he identifies have been so completely monetized, and are so profitable for media generally but social media, cable television, talk radio in particular, that I don't see a solution though @ArthurBrooks has profound insights into possible palliatives.
3. I'll also be talking this week w/ @NoahCRothman about his book, "Unjust: Social Justice and the Unmaking of America."amazon.com/Unjust-Social-… Noah's book is a sort of perfect companion to @ArthurBrooks b/c it illustrates the enormity of the problem.

Prepping for a 2020 talk today, I reviewed former VP @JoeBiden life. I “knew but really didn’t know” about the tragedy of 1972 when weeks after a stunning upset win in his first Senate campaign, he lost his wife and baby girl to a car-truck crash, w/ his two boys injured as well.
I don’t know if he’s written about this, or spoken at length about it, but pause, especially if you are a happily married parent, and ask yourself could you have survived such a blow? And not just survived, but rebuilt a life and career. I don’t agree w/ @JoeBiden much.
But I find myself thinking about the depth of despair he must have been in, and the way he climbed back, and conclude where some would have become hard and unfeeling, @JoeBiden dealt w/devastation it by becoming the opposite, a friend of all. It isn’t a reason to vote for him.

1) "They are an economic necessity" - Not true. The idea that a bunch of desperately poor, uneducated, unskilled, non-English speaking foreigners are an economic necessity is absurd. In fact, when you compare cost vs. benefit, it is obvious that they are just liability.
2) "They do work Americans won’t do" - Not true. They do work Americans won’t do for $7 an hour (especially if Americans can collect welfare and unemployment instead). Of course, if you got rid of the illegals, the jobs wouldn’t pay $7 an hour.

First, Schumer is right. Americans should read Stephen’s piece. But they need to read it with a critical eye. Why? /1
Because as much as it is a clear condemnation of some of the worst of Trump’s offenses against democracy, it also promotes one of the keys to Trump's rise: bothsiderism. /2
Stephen's point is that people are struggling to believe in America - in particular, American's best vision of our perfectable union. /3

I don't typically like "Trump is divisive" rhetoric but I think it's becoming increasingly hard to ignore that he and the legions of trolls he acts as inspiration to are acting as accelerants for a battle that the vast majority of Americans don't want to pick a side in.
Culturally, most people in this country have less a strict moral compass than a desire to stand in a middle that provides the illusion of objectivity.
There's a lot of justified anxiety from marginalized people who are being directly harmed by this administration, but I feel like I see a lot of generalized anxiety that may have more to do with discomfort with the fact that the center position is increasingly inhumane.

Have you ever thought about what makes a country peaceful (internally)? Why, for example, has the US been peacefully changing leaders for so long? I know the kneejerk reaction is the Constitution, and there’s certainly some truth to that. But it’s not just that.
The primary reason countries are peaceful is because the citizens aren’t angry with their government. Angry enough to change the government I mean. Look at what’s happening in Iran. A government with immense repressive powers, designed to keep its people under control.
Yet, they’re currently undergoing a revolution. The Iranian people have had enough. They rose up during Obama’s tenure but failed because they had no outside support, but also because they didn’t have a good plan for overcoming the government. .@ThomasWictor has articulated this

1/ My take: Tonight a bipartisan rebellion in the Senate rebuffed a determined Republican strategy to strong arm Democrats, govern by short-term Continuing Resolution, and to delay and derail the Dream Act.
2/ The vote tonight in the Senate to defeat the House-passed Continuing Resolution was a stinging rebuke of the dysfunctional governance practiced by President Trump and Republican congressional leaders.
3/ This rejection of business as usual is exactly why the vast majority of Americans are frustrated with a Congress that seems to view a minority of Americans as the privileged and a majority of Americans as the enemy.
