1. ICYMI:Audio/transcript of a long interviewed I had with @HowardSchultz on Thursday: hughhewitt.com/howard-schultz…
2.We discussed some headlines that involved him but mostly we talked about his book “From The Ground Up” which is a very good, illuminating read: amazon.com/Ground-Up-Jour…
3. He is a humble guy, @HowardSchultz (For example, he made a mistake in the interview and quickly corrected it.) He is also a Horatio Alger story and an incredible business success. He’s married nearly 40 years with 2 great kids, and every chapter of the book underscores service
4. Now many on the left don’t like @HowardSchultz because the perceive him as a threat to their candidates, a vote-draining pro-@realDonaldTrump reality and thus are discounting his story without ever hearing it. Now I don’t know if Schultz could bridge my concerns over issues.
5.But I’m willing to hear him out —and have already read his book. The problem w/ American politics today, a problem discussed in @arthurbrooks new book “Love Your Enemies” is the reflexive refusal to accord any opponent even the possibility of good faith. amazon.com/Love-Your-Enem…
6. The only way past this paralysis is through the development of a subset of social capital, described by @arthurbrooks as “bridging capital,” the sort of exchange between tribes of unique experiences. That begins with knowledge of the others. W/ @HowardSchultz, w/his book.
7. W/other candidates, a town hall like @jaketapper conducted with @PeteButtigieg. With 72 hours of cable TV programming available a day, and many times that amount of radio hours, it ought to be possible to give every would be leader a chance to build some bridging capital.
8.That’s an obligation on broadcasters to offer + candidates to accept. As a start, I encourage everyone in my business to read @arrhurbrooks new book. Reviving politics is a shared effort. It cannot begin w/accusations and recriminations. It can proceed w/ doses of good faith.
9. But I fear many “in the game” are too invested in an outcome to even spend the time necessary to read and prep for serious conversation. It’s just not done. But broadcast can heal itself. Start with @arthurbrooks amazon.com/Love-Your-Enem…
