Today the #gammonballrun is trudging soullessly from Hartlepool to Middlesbrough. This is the published route, via Middlesbrough’s iconic Transporter Bridge. (1/4)

So they gathered around the corner, all 2 and a third buses of them, and were possibly put off actually getting on the buses as this would have been caught on camera. The buses went back to base on Portrack Lane, and the rambling ramblers carried on. (3/4)
The alternative route is about a 5 mile detour, appropriately past the local tip, and also past this @ByDonkeys installation...

The YouTube algorithm that I helped build in 2011 still recommends the flat earth theory by the *hundreds of millions*. This investigation by @RawStory shows some of the real-life consequences of this badly designed AI.
This spring at SxSW, @SusanWojcicki promised "Wikipedia snippets" on debated videos. But they didn't put them on flat earth videos, and instead @YouTube is promoting merchandising such as "NASA lies - Never Trust a Snake". 2/

Today we’re going to talk statistics and semantics. I’m going to do so via the medium of one of Twitter’s favourite stats 1.7% (aka “intersex is as common as red heads.”). The statistic comes from Fausto-Sterling’s work, which you can see a review of here

To understand the statistic, we have to drill down into what the meaning of the word intersex is. Most people think of hermaphrodites. Let’s stress at the beginning there has been no example ever of a human being with both sets of working reproductive organs.
There is a very tiny percentage of people who are born with both testicular and ovarian tissue (what Fausto-Sterling calls “true hermaphrodites”). And when I say tiny, we’re talking intersex tiny, as in 0.0117/1,000 live births, or one in 1,000,000. These are very complex cases.

1/ Former Republican @MaxBoot spent eight years trying to stop Obama as an aide to both @SenJohnMcCain McCain and @MittRomney and as a longtime conservative columnist.

Boot, who is now a columnist for the @washingtonpost was never a Trump fan
2/ but he did write a column the day after the election in which he argued that a @realDonaldTrump presidency “might not be so bad” and encouraged optimism.

Now, in a new piece for the Post, Boot is prepared to say that, actually, it is that bad.

#Today's story to #EndFamilySeparation Four months ago, Dad and 4-month-old entered at the Texas/Mexico border and requested #asylum. Dad and child were immediately separated and the baby put in ORR custody. #FamiliesBelongTogether
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether

Today we look at the Health and Lifestyle Survey by Boniface and Tefft published in 2002. This study looked at ~2600 men and women. The methodology was a single interview with follow up. Patients with existing CVD were excluded.
The study showed a strong and significant effect on CHD mortality in women, but none in men. The pooled analysis was not mentioned in their results. The average SFA consumption was 414 calories per day in the non-excluded patients. This is 20% of a typical day's calories.
SFA consumption was generally higher in the men than in the women. CHD mortality as a whole in the unexcluded group was 8% in men, 4% in women. You can see that age was the most important determiner of risk from this chart. nature.com/articles/16015…
