White supremacy is tough to nail down because the majority of white supremacists are either unaware they’re white supremacists or else adept at hiding their white supremacy through strategized rhetoric.
In the past, American politicians touted their white supremacy, made long and impassioned speeches about it. Since the Civil War, and particularly since World War II it’s been hidden by policy and euphemisms. If it were out in the open we could unseat it entirely.
The threat of Nazism sent the rhetoric of white supremacy underground, made American politicians refocus their attempts to push it and necessitated rhetoric and dog whistles. Now it’s jusy everpresent while white supremacists enjoy plausible deniability.
