oh god. one thing that jumped out at me in that Esquire piece is the teacher using the subject of "gay people" to teach debate. this happened in my high school too and as a closeted gay person all it did was show me how many people hated me
it's interesting how casually this tidbit is dropped in a piece that looks at straight white men through a lens of sympathy. "you poor thing," it seems to say. "the times are leaving you behind. how will you cope?" in the background, some kid's humanity is being put up for debate
one thing that is always communicated to me in pieces like this is the vast purview of white men. for gay people, it's narrow: they want acceptance. Black people, also narrow: they want to stop being killed. but the white man is situated somewhere above. he judges these arguments
