Back in college debate, someone would occasionally run “abolish the Electoral College”. There weren’t any very good arguments against this, so opposition usually fell back on “look, it doesn’t matter; it almost always yields the same result as the popular vote anyway.”
So: No, because while it’s broken in principle either way, people don’t devote bandwidth to it as long as it’s not yielding a different outcome than the obvious alternative.
But when demographics and polarization converge to repeatedly give the White House to a candidate who won many fewer votes, the problem is practical rather than abstract. So yeah, the result of the election matters. But not in a way that undermines the argument.
