There’s an obvious parallel here to the perception by historically privileged groups that the erosion of their special status constitutes an attack. “If my vote doesn’t get 5x the weight of other Americans’, I’m being erased.”
The point, to be clear, is not that rural Americans constitute a “privileged class” on net—clearly not—but that our perception of what is “unfair” gets easily warped by our sense of what’s normal.
That said, as a libertarian whose political preferences are consistently swamped by the vastly larger population of non-libertarians, I will be happy to accept a multiplier on my vote to compensate for this injustice.
