This is exactly backwards. The EC makes campaigns triage: No point campaigning in a state you’re going to win, because (except for ME & NE) extra votes don’t help you. Ditto a state you’re going to lose—45% is no better than 0%. All the focus goes to a few swing states.
Donald Trump has been in permanent campaign mode since being sworn in. How many campaign events has he held in California? Massachussetts? Vermont? None, of course. He mostly does rallies in states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Nevada, and Florida.
A few ego-stroke events in deep Red states thrown in for good measure, sure. But you look at the list, it’s disproportionately a handful of swing states, and no effort at all to make inroads in the bluest states. TRUMP’S OWN CAMPAIGN disproves his claim. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_p…
Also, insofar as this is supposed to be a “cities vs rural” issue, where has Trump held his rallies? Small towns? Bucolic farms? Of course not. He holds rallies in major metropolitan areas.
