If this was pre-Lambda I'd probably agree. Unfortunately this opinion is almost 5 years out of date. Serverless is probably the right solution (the @ben11kehoe "March 2019 focus" version). Problem is that most of the tech industry is 5 years further behind even this opinion.

I sat down with my teenage nephew (<16) yesterday. He's studying python as part of GCSE. He showed me some code. I asked him why he hadn't used one of the string methods to make something easier and he said...

...it's because they hadn't taught it to him yet.
I showed him the python docs and the method and he found another method that would have been better for what he wanted.

He hadn't thought to look there. (what are they teaching them?)

I did wonder why he hadn't asked for my help, so I asked him what he thought I did...
"Something in computers?"
"You know I know how to code right?"
"I didn't know you knew python"
"What did you think I knew?"
"I dunno. C? C++?"

So I told him to Google me to find out if what I say online makes sense or not...

Turns out that he understands serverless

I don't hack on tech in my spare time.

I have 5 kids

And a wife

And family

And friends

And a house to maintain

And my health

And other hobbies I don't have time for

Why would I spend my time doing what I do at work outside of work?
FYI this tweet was partly in response to a number of tech people tweeting about things like (paraphrasing) "I'm going to play with k8s on the plane" and "I'm going to spend the weekend learning rust"...

We have one life.

Amazon, Microsoft, Google/Alphabet are all trying to get Oil companies to use their cloud and use compute/ML to extract oil more efficiently.

It's unethical and wrong.

Not only do cloud providers want the oil industries money but the carbon emissions from electricity running data centres are at least equivalent to aviation

Maybe we're being shown exactly what to do by children.

I know the past decade has seemed like a million years but does anyone remember the New START treaty?

Signed in 2010, it was supposed to limit deployed strategic nuclear warheads to 1550, and deployed ICBMs, SLBMs, and heavy bombers to 700.
2 decades after the collapse of the USSR, the USA and Russia both believed they still needed 1500 deployed nuclear warheads.

Fun fact: that number could be hundreds more bc they only count 1 warhead per bomber.

Fun fact 2.0: the treaty doesn't limit stockpiled warheads at all.
A conservative estimate lists the total # of operable nukes on this planet at around 15,000.

Around 4,000 can be reasonably expected to be on 24/7 high alert.

#serverless advocates - we are doing something wrong. I have been putting this off for a long time but I really think it is important and has to be said. Warning: LONG thread.
The trigger for this thread was a talk I gave at #DevOpsDays Edinburgh. It wasn't the talk per-say, but the whole conference experience (which was awesome, but that's a topic for another thread).
Here I am, with around 200 people who really care about the DevOps culture and practices - and so little of them has any experience with serverless tech.

- infra provisioning is hard so we need serverless.

1 - How my serverless platform works is largely irrelevant to me. That’s the point. What matters to me is what the platform provides.
2 - Don’t confuse individual developer problems with organization problems. How many organizations are making devs configure their own infrastructure?
