I sat down with my teenage nephew (<16) yesterday. He's studying python as part of GCSE. He showed me some code. I asked him why he hadn't used one of the string methods to make something easier and he said...

...it's because they hadn't taught it to him yet.
I showed him the python docs and the method and he found another method that would have been better for what he wanted.

He hadn't thought to look there. (what are they teaching them?)

I did wonder why he hadn't asked for my help, so I asked him what he thought I did...
"Something in computers?"
"You know I know how to code right?"
"I didn't know you knew python"
"What did you think I knew?"
"I dunno. C? C++?"

So I told him to Google me to find out if what I say online makes sense or not...

Turns out that he understands serverless
In fact, after explaining cloud, he understands the point of serverless better than most people who do cloud.

He didn't understand the idea of building your own stuff if someone has already built it for you.

He thought what I did at AWS was really cool.
Still can't get over the fact that at school they're teaching them how to write a program, but not teaching them to look in the docs and not teaching them about cloud. Seems a bit old school to me

Still was fun to try to explain serverless to someone with no idea what cloud is
