I don't hack on tech in my spare time.

I have 5 kids

And a wife

And family

And friends

And a house to maintain

And my health

And other hobbies I don't have time for

Why would I spend my time doing what I do at work outside of work?
FYI this tweet was partly in response to a number of tech people tweeting about things like (paraphrasing) "I'm going to play with k8s on the plane" and "I'm going to spend the weekend learning rust"...

We have one life.

I sat down with my teenage nephew (<16) yesterday. He's studying python as part of GCSE. He showed me some code. I asked him why he hadn't used one of the string methods to make something easier and he said...

...it's because they hadn't taught it to him yet.
I showed him the python docs and the method and he found another method that would have been better for what he wanted.

He hadn't thought to look there. (what are they teaching them?)

I did wonder why he hadn't asked for my help, so I asked him what he thought I did...
"Something in computers?"
"You know I know how to code right?"
"I didn't know you knew python"
"What did you think I knew?"
"I dunno. C? C++?"

So I told him to Google me to find out if what I say online makes sense or not...

Turns out that he understands serverless

If this was pre-Lambda I'd probably agree. Unfortunately this opinion is almost 5 years out of date. Serverless is probably the right solution (the @ben11kehoe "March 2019 focus" version). Problem is that most of the tech industry is 5 years further behind even this opinion.

Amazon, Microsoft, Google/Alphabet are all trying to get Oil companies to use their cloud and use compute/ML to extract oil more efficiently.

It's unethical and wrong.

Not only do cloud providers want the oil industries money but the carbon emissions from electricity running data centres are at least equivalent to aviation

As an industry, tech needs to recognise it's power and walk out for #climatechange

Maybe tech needs a #climatestrike too!

Maybe we're being shown exactly what to do by children.

(2) And we now have more disposable income. If we wanted we could go to the movies frequently. We could buy any cable, satellite, HBO, Showtime packages we wished. But why pay for crap? We won't.
(3) The entertainment & news industries really screwed up with us. NOW we've developed new habits. We have no desire to passively devour their product.

Meeting you,@alexisohanian, and @hueypriest at that party was one part of the catalyst that got me into the tech industry. I met REAL people who built an awesome thing that people LOVED. You brought tech into a reality for me in a way that my non-famous nerd friends did not. 2/10

In late-August of 2010, my dear first-cousin was diagnosed with inoperable, non-curable, small-cell lung #cancer. He and I were raised like #siblings and cared for one another as brother and sister, a very close-knit family.
My #cousin was an amazing man, husband, and father to twin boys; who were only 14 when he died in September 2017. He died at his home, surrounded by his family and friends…just how he’d wished.

In the midst of the tests and various medical consultations, it occurred to me that my life had stopped. My symptoms limited my movements and where I could go. So, I couldn't plan and I couldn't project forward.
Things like traveling or dating went out of the window. I was stuck on finding a solution to my health challenge. My tests are still ongoing. I'm still seeing doctors, but we think we now know what's wrong. And so, I am hopeful.

1>$ I will be subscribing to the services and providers who voluntarily maintain the closest model of #netneutrality.

If @Comcast starts charging for prioritized services, I will not only opt for the cheapest and most basic plan possible...
2>$ ...I will move to any other #ISP that maintains fair and open access. I will move to a new neighborhood if I must.

I can go back to cellular or satellite internet, or 1995-style #dialup if it means supporting fair and open access providers. 96kb #ISDN? I'm lovin it.
