RankBrain is an AI-based system Google began using in 2016 to understand how pages are related to concepts. It means we can better return relevant pages even if they don’t contain the exact words used in a search, by understanding the page is related to other words & concepts...
Neural matching is an AI-based system Google began using in 2018 primarily to understand how words are related to concepts. It's like a super-synonym system. Synonyms are words that are closely related to other words...
For example, neural matching helps us understand that a search for "why does my TV look strange" is related to the concept of "the soap opera effect." We can then return pages about the soap opera effect, even if the exact words aren't used...
In summary:
-- RankBrain helps Google better relate pages to concepts
-- Neural matching helps Google better relate words to searches.

And there's nothing special searchers or webmasters need to do. These are part of our core systems designed to naturally increase understanding.

Personalization doesn’t happen often & generally doesn’t dramatically change search results from one person to another. It is usually so lightly applied that the results are very similar to what someone would see without personalization…

Here’s an update about updates -- updates to our search algorithms. As explained before, each day, Google usually releases one or more changes designed to improve our results. Most have little noticeable change but help us continue to incrementally improve search….
Sometimes, an update may be more noticeable. We aim to confirm those when we feel there is actionable information that content owners might take. For example, when our Speed Update happened, with gave months of advanced notice and advice….

Sometimes, we make broad changes to our core algorithm. We inform about those because the actionable advice is that there is nothing in particular to “fix,” and we don’t want content owners to mistakenly try to change things that aren’t issues….

Today we're launching some changes on Google Images to help connect users and useful websites. This will include removing the View Image button. The Visit button remains, so users can see images in the context of the webpages they're on.
The Search by Image button is also being removed. Reverse image search *still works* through the way most people use it, from the search bar of Google Images.
For those asking, yes, these changes came about in part due to our settlement with Getty Images this week (see also theverge.com/2018/2/15/1701…). They are designed to strike a balance between serving user needs and publisher concerns, both stakeholders we value.

In my earlier thread about animism, I talked about how words are imperfect models, stand-ins, handles we hang on things in order to grasp them better.

All words are metaphors, in a sense. The word is not the thing it stands for but is analogized to it.

One would have thought that Tweets with Childlock as this, simplified to the fullest will not need explanation but they sometimes confuse the simple folks one was trying to help from sinking in the linguistic territory abnitio.
There is no one with a meaningful purpose that has a clear path. You can only have clarity on your ability and capacity (if you have found yourself) and would need to trust God in the rest. Look at Moses, was his path clear before the read sea? Of course not. It seemed impossible

It's our 20th birthday week at @Google and we're having a special event today in SF to share a look at the future of search. I'll be tweeting a few things....
This is a look back at a big change in search but which continues to be important: understanding synonyms. How people search is often different from information that people write solutions about.
Last few months, Google has been using neural matching, --AI method to better connect words to concepts. Super synonyms, in a way, and impacting 30% of queries. Don't know what "soap opera effect" is to search for it? We can better figure it out.
