“If he spent as much time talking to the Board of Aldermen as he did holding news conferences, relationships would be better.”

Bernie really is consistent, isn’t he? #VettingBernie
🤷🏻‍♂️
Within a month, a shadow alderboard formed to watch the aldermen who weren’t sufficiently supportive of Sanders.

“Sanders said he needs people whom he ‘trusts implicitly,’ and who ‘share my political beliefs.’ He said he could not carry out the ‘major change’ he was elected for without that team.”
“Sanders lashed out at aldermen for...criticizing the competency of the nominees.” Well, to be fair, one was dead. Source: newspapers.com/image/53280317…
Here’s the rest of that article: newspapers.com/image/53280320…
“The Allard appointment ‘does make wonder who well he’s researched’ his other nominations.”

Having seen who he hires to run his campaigns, it seems like he still has this particular problem. Source: newspapers.com/image/20069134…
“Sanders accused city aldermen of attempting to usurp his power to keep him from carrying out the platform he was elected on.” I want to point out that this is from June of 1981. He became mayor in April. Two months in, and he’s already resorting to conspiratorial thinking.
“As an alderman, I’m tired of threats and the mayor’s forced insistence on confrontation.”
God, what a whiner. Source: newspapers.com/image/20069302…
Again, he’s only been mayor for two months at this point.
Fascinating choice of words. Source: newspapers.com/image/20069475…
Here’s an oral history of the time from some of the people involved:
I appreciate this shade from the Burlington Free Press.
That last quote was from June 22, 1981. Not even three full months into Bernie’s first term. newspapers.com/image/20070275…

Holy shit, it’s the same guy I found before.
I was wrong about him being the first of the bros. Bernie was the first, and the Liberty Union Party soon followed.
He sued the Aldermen within three months of taking office.
“Friends of Sanders whom Sanders declined to name, served the legal papers.” Source: newspapers.com/image/20070320…
Luckily, his friend was recognizable.
What an asshole. Just unnecessarily assholish right from the start of his career, and he hasn’t changed.
I wonder if he feels this way about Presidential appointments and Senatorial prerogative to advise & consent.
“Saying that he refuses ‘to be saddled with a team of people who are not sympathetic to my vision,’ Mayor Bernard Sanders initiated court proceedings.” Source: newspapers.com/image/53280489…
“William Sessions...forgot to tell aldermen when to go to court.” Sanders said, “I don’t think it was a big deal.”

I’ve almost made it to Bernie’s sixth month in office, and what I’ve learned so far is that Bernie really does not like accountability. Source: newspapers.com/image/20040340…
Reminder: one of those independent councils was run by his girlfriend at the time.
Here’s a good reminder of what all this is about and just how pro-worker Bernie Sanders really is. Spoiler: he’s on your side only if you’re on his. Source: newspapers.com/image/20042278…
After rereading this thread, I just want to apologize for the typos. Sometimes my eyes start to glaze over after a few dozen articles or so.
Anyway, back to the story. “Sanders angrily disputed Mahoney’s contention that the original suit over the aldermen’s rejection of mayoral nominees for top city posts was frivolous.” Source: newspapers.com/image/20046860…
“Sanders said he was disappointed. To retaliate, he said, he will veto the aldermen’s decision last week to pay $3,700 in legal fees for the three attorneys who represented them and four city officials.”

“To retaliate, he said.” 🧐

Found an honest-to-god Bernie Becky. I included the note from the editors at the end because it has obvious echoes in today’s media environment. newspapers.com/image/53369270…
“We held that Sanders was not qualified for the office of mayor.... Nevertheless, Sanders is the mayor and will be for at least 18 more months.” Such resignation, and it’s only been six months. Source: newspapers.com/image/20034883…
The alderman complained that “it was inappropriate for two unelected, unappointed people to be compiling the information.” There were also articles about them being mad about the postage, but I’ll spare everyone. Source: newspapers.com/image/20047379…
