So why — I hear you ask — does New Zealand have SPS regulations on imported *vehicles, machinery and equipment*?

Answer: because of the brown marmorated stink bug

Quite a heated debate now over the statutory instrument changing the "exit date" in UK law so it aligns with the actual exit date under EU law. Is this the release of suppressed mischief that was bubbling under the indicative votes debate
It's taken some listening to a very long speech, but it seems William Cash is challenge the legality of the proposal to have two exit dates

A thread on GATT Article 24 and the proposed Brexit options, since it’s likely to be mentioned.

It’s not just “Malthouse Plan B”. At least 10 of the 16 options have to comply with GATT Article 24

And then there’s GATS Article 5 for services

GATS Art5 apples to ANY free trade agreement (or closer integration) in services between them.

There was testimony to say that leaving the EU will disrupt the financial industry. That many US companies invest in the UK for the Single Market and may rethink their presence if this changes.
3. The capacity that the UK has to do all the things it needs to do will be stressed.

A messy divorce between the EU and the UK would disrupt US jobs, trade and investments while impairing our allies’ ability to meet the problems of the world.

Some thoughts on the political declaration on future partnership (economic bits only). First, it's clear from this document that the UK is heading towards a hard Brexit, with considerable implications for cross-border trade (1)
The agreement removes all tariffs and quantitative restrictions, which we already knew. The key question is non-tariff barriers. (2)
We get more detail on these in the 'regulatory aspects' section. Provisions on technical barriers to trade (TBT) and sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures are standard in free trade agreements and do not necessarily go much beyond WTO rules (3)

Which is essentially already the case, as HMG paper stated in Aug 2017:

“Barnier said that only live animals, animal-derived goods and food products would need to undergo physical checks at the actual ports in Great Britain and then in Northern Ireland.”

Barnier plan:

“The first category was customs, which is seen as the most sensitive.

According to the note, customs declarations could be filled in in advance. The only physical check would be the scanning of a barcode on a container.”

“The second type of control would be for VAT and excise duty.

Mr Barnier said that the information contained within the customs declaration "would suffice" to calculate the final payment.”

As the wonderful “WTO option” is hyped again, let me just focus on one particular issue that has bugged Brexit again and again. “But our laws are perfectly aligned, so we won’t have a problem”
This claim comes in different forms. I want to focus on it in the format of “there accordingly won’t be customs problems, the EU will/has to leave our products in as before”
In the most stark, logical form it says this: UK products are good to enter the EU without impediment five minutes before Brexit takes place, nothing will have changed in UK laws, health checks, etc. 10 minutes later. Would the EU cruelly impose controls etc.?
