I was discussing this fascinating jug with Professor Marcus Milwright, who is writing a forthcoming paper on it. The inscribed jug is from Raqqa and dated to the late 8th or 9th century, displaying verses from Q.55 (al-Raḥmān). --->
Marcus' paper is looking at the context in which a Qur'anic inscription of this type was placed onto a jug, the possible meanings that can be inferred from the use of ink on pottery and the fact that the inscription spirals around the vessel itself. --->
His paper will also discuss its relationship to the Psalms, and Christian amuletic practices in Late Antiquity and early Islam. Should be a very interesting read!
