EMERGENCY: The NYS budget goes to print in 24 hours & the Governor & legislature still have not included any money to continue one of their signature programs-the Liberty Defense Project, which gives immigrant NYers access to lawyers. 1000s risk losing lawyers halfway thru cases.
Just 3 months ago @NYGovCuomo announced expansion of program: “While the federal government wages war on immigrant families seeking the American Dream, New York is standing by our commitment to protect people from all backgrounds and embrace our diversity.”governor.ny.gov/news/governor-…
Over 30k have received legal services through program since *just 2017.* $10 million is small price to protect immigrant NYers from the Administration’s xenophobic violence & live up to our ideals. Legal services are critical to protecting our communities.
Whether youre in NY or not this is an issue in which we all have a stake. Tell @CarlHeastie @AndreaSCousins & @NYGovCuomo to renew $10M for immigrant legal services funding in the budget, or they are abandoning thousands of New Yorkers to face Trump's policies alone. #SaveLDP

If we ever hope to reduce cycles of violence, we must accept reality that the American prison system isn’t just cruel, costly, & dangerous. *Prison itself* also causes more violence by exacerbating the very conditions that create violence in first place. nytimes.com/2019/03/30/us/…
I read this article while reading “Until We Reckon,” a powerful look at how mass incarceration in part fails crime survivors. Notes four traditional drivers of violence in communities: shame, isolation, violence, & diminished ability to meet economic needs.” Sound familiar?
Turns out American prison conditions *reinforce the traditional drivers of violence.* “As a nation, we have developed a response to violence that is characterized by precisely what we know to be the main drivers of violence.” No wonder then, prison actually increases recidivism.

25 shots. Into a 20 y/o black man asleep in car. Blame not just on police dept. But on prosecutors who continue to rely on officer for prosecutions despite previously shooting an unarmed man & history of brutality. Still hasn’t been charged. No accountability breeds violence.
To add insult to injury (actually, death). The body cam video was released today, but “Police officials did not give the family or their attorney a heads-up about their decision to release it. It caught them off-guard.” Black victims & their families are treated as subhuman.
Vallejo police initially said that McCoy had a gun in his lap, & that officers opened fire when he did not respond to demands to put his hands up & instead reached downwards. They didn’t mention he was sleeping. Video does not show him “reach[ing] downwards.” They lied. Obviously

While you were sleeping, Cuomo and legislative leaders announced a budget agreement that includes congestion pricing, and several new taxes to fund the MTA.
We still don’t know what the cost of the tolls to enter NYC south of 60th street.

A 6 person panel will be charged with advising the TBTA on tolls, exemptions and credits. Tolls will only be charged once a day and implementation will not begin until Dec. 31, 2020, per release
There will also be a tax on homes valued at $25 million or above, per agreement. The release by Cuomo’s office doesn’t say if that tax is confined to NYC or for the entire state. It would go into effect July 1, 2019.
