In a complaint against @facebook, @HUDgov says the company sold targeted ads that discriminated on the basis of race and violated the Fair Housing Act.

According to the complaint, Facebook employed a map tool that allowed users to exclude communities with a *literal* red line.
Modern-day redlining is alive and well, as @Aaron_Glantz and @eman_thedataman have reported.

They found that African Americans and Latinos continue to be routinely denied conventional mortgage loans at rates far higher than their white counterparts. revealnews.org/article/for-pe…
The problem persisted in 61 metro areas – even when controlling for applicants’ income, loan amount and neighborhood.
.@eman_thedataman's analysis, based on 31 million records, relied on techniques used by leading academics, the Federal Reserve and Department of Justice to identify lending disparities.
