If your goal in building freeways & widening roads is to “solve congestion,” you’ll always fail. If your actual goal is to get more driving, & more sprawl, you’ll always succeed.

Since I’m asked this CONSTANTLY, once & for all, if your city-region is REALLY concerned about “solving car congestion,” u need a combination of smart land-use, inviting walking/biking/transit infrastructure, & a pricing mechanism for driving high enough to get people to change.
“We found that there’s this perfect one-to-one relationship. If a city increased its road capacity by 10%, then the amount of driving in that city went up by 10%.” One of the best articles on why building bigger roads just leads to more driving. V/@WIRED wired.com/2014/06/wuwt-t…
Would everyone out there FINALLY understand the truth that building bigger roads WON’T SOLVE TRAFFIC CONGESTION if every one of you retweeted the tweets in this thread? I mean, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU? #InducedDemand #LawOfCongestion HT @jeffreytumlin
“It's well-demonstrated that you can't build your way out of traffic congestion by building roads — the more you build, the more people drive. As the saying goes, building more lanes to address congestion is like loosening your belt to address obesity.”

When you take away lanes of traffic, cars don’t just disappear like a magic trick. People behave rationally & make different decisions — IF other real choices exist. Trade space for cars with #multimodal space, & everyone moves better. HT @urbanthoughts11
