#Oslo is ALMOST banning cars from its city centre, replacing parking spaces with flower beds, & building 60km of bike-lanes. All to create an almost car-free city centre by this year. Via @wef

The best recent waterfront development in the world? Definitely top 3.

- 1/2 housing, 1/2 job space, lots of retail.
- half of housing 3+ bedrooms, lots of kids
- outstanding public realm design.
- diverse, interesting architecture.

Aker Brygge/Tjuvholmen communities in #Oslo.
Few things I enjoy more than deep conversations (over drinks) on urgent city-building challenges with smart urbanists (who are also friends). Great catching up with @JasonThorne_RPP & @MikeLydon tonight in #Oslo during @UrbanFutureConf #UFGC19 Europe’s biggest urbanism gathering.
People love to be next to water. Waterfront designs should make that experience extra delightful. For young people on this so-so Tuesday afternoon in #Oslo’s Aker Brygge/Tjuvholmen neighbourhoods, that includes jumping into the Fjord. The design encourages jumping, & lingering.
A decade ago, #Oslo had 200K of residences within air pollution “red zones” where on bad pollution days, children with asthma & adults with heart or respiratory illnesses shouldn’t go outside. Through concerted effort, that number’s been reduced to 10K. But more needs to be done.

The number of cars in #Oslo’s city centre has actually been going down steadily since 2012, & especially since 2015. They had a low parking MAXIMUM of 1 space for every 4 apartments. Now the parking max is 0. Since 2016, vehicle traffic has dropped 11%. oslo.kommune.no/getfile.php/13…
First #Oslo buried the freeway separating the historic city centre from their beautiful Fjord. They replaced it with housing, offices & cultural uses, & a multi-modal boulevard that actually moves more people than the freeway did. Then they’ve been building this, the #FjordCity.

The typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/3rd of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, & most of the energy that does, moves the car, not people. #CityMakingMath

Still think drivers pay their way & people on bikes are “getting a free ride?” If commuters had to pay for their impact on society, drivers would pay 87 cents/km. People on bikes would GET 25 cents/km.

One of my most important conversations ever was an early 1 with my friend Jan Gehl, who noted how we can double the # of people in a place by doubling the # who come, OR by doubling how long they stay. The latter is MUCH easier. A formative observation for my #StickyStreets work.
One of the easiest ways to make more #StickyStreets for people is by transforming street parking spaces into small people places, like #parklets, “#streateries” etc. On this #ParkingDay, don’t just admire these — commit to do MORE of them in your city, FASTER. #ParkingDay2018

It’s actually remarkable that we still fall for the sales pitch that cars equal freedom. There’s nothing free about the lack of choice that comes from car dependancy. And building our city-regions around cars is the most costly thing we can do. Does that sound “free” to you?

Until now, the only SEO space where AMP was kind of "mandatory" was on news: if you want to appear on the "Top stories" box, you kind of need to have your articles to use AMP. You can appear there withouth AMP, but you don't get the same visual benefits #AMP #SEO .
Now Google is bringing "Stories" (like Instagram Stories, Snapchat Stories, etc.) to search results. They just announced it at #ampconf (see ) #AMP #SEO
This means that for certain kind of queries (by now: travel, and later also gaming, movies, tv and fashion) the first result will get another "special box" called "Visual Stories" where you can only appear using not only AMP, but AMP stories #AMP #SEO

@DCHCMPO As more people move here, they encounter land use patterns, transportation infrastructure, and policy making that encourage driving as the primary or only travel mode. So what do they do? They drive.
At the state level, resources through @NCDOT to make lasting, substantial changes in nonhighway infrastructure are paltry compared to those for road widening, intersection and interchange "improvements," and other projects that reinforce driving as the best and only travel mode.

Any time you encounter an autonomous vehicle advocate who claims AVs will make the world a better place, ask them these questions:
1. Cars are the leading cause of death for humans under 40. We could save all these lives starting right now, for much less money, with better street design, enforcement of existing laws, and more difficult drivers' tests. Why not do those proven things first?
2. You say that everyone will share AVs. Do you share your car now? Why not? Do you carpool every time you get in a car? Why not?

We tend to think of street safety projects as massive overhauls of long corridors. This usually involves multiple city agencies, months if not years of planning, and an equal amount of time devoted to community review. 1/x
It doesn't have to be this way. What if we gave people the power to change their own streets, block by block? 2/x
On my block, 100% of the curbside space is devoted to the storage of automobiles. That equals about 60 parking spaces on one block, give or take a couple of hydrants and the size of the parked cars. 3/x
