Six months ago, I would not have believed that one could turn a terrace into an akshayapaathram of fruits, herbs &vegetables just using pots, grow bags, cocopeat, sand & cow dung. The seeds largely come from the TN government’s “roof top garden” initiative tnhorticulture.tn.gov.in/horti/do-it-yo…
Of course, with about 350 days of sunshine, chillies are a no brainer. in retrospect, one plant is enough since it’s pretty productive
And of course, cousins from the Solanaceae family, tomatoes, eggplant and turkey berry (sundakkai)
This dwarf lime tree that grows in a largish barrel produces limes that are so full of flavour that the industrially sourced ones from the grocery store are positively bland in comparison
And yeah, even “winter” vegetables like carrot! And by the way, the leaves have a delicious fennel-y, parsley like taste, so don’t throw them away!
Dwarf variants of Pomegranate, guava and Papaya. Thanks to the power of genetic engineering and artificial selection
Bitter gourd and broad beans.
This super fast-growing spinach that is called “Bangalore Keerai”, fenugreek (methi) and Palak
Basil, spring onions and okra (ladies finger)
And a dwarf banana being embraced by a cluster bean vine
And oh, some Gundumalli (corpulent jasmine)
For someone who has lived all his life in large urban environments, growing your own food provides this eye-opening realization that the expression “make stuff from thin air” is something only plants are capable of doing (they literally turn the carbon in CO2 into our food)
