It's a mistake to see Fox News as a tool of the Trump administration. It's really just one tool among many that the Murdoch empire uses to advance its financial and political agenda.

This is 2 stories: global politics and family drama. The putative Murdoch heirs, James and Lachlan, are different people with different visions. James is a Davos-style globalist, who wanted to depoliticize the company. Lachlan wanted to lean fully into far-right nationalism.
Lachlan was the frontrunner for the throne. But everything was thrown up in the air in January 2018, when Rupert fell on his way to the bathroom on Lachlan’s yacht. He was so close to death that his wife summoned all of his adult children to his bedside.

Tensions were already running high inside the Murdoch family. The Disney deal made everything a lot worse. “If you take another call on this deal, you will not have a son!” Lachlan told his father during the negotiations.

James lost the succession fight, but after the Disney deal, he dismissed what remains of the Murdoch empire as “an American political project.” James is now striking out on his own, but he and his wife are going to fight the Fox News agenda from outside the company.
James Murdoch, who wants nothing to do with Fox News, tried to sell his shares in the remaining company to Lachlan. Lachlan didn’t want to buy them.

Rudd is saying some interesting things about the Murdoch media. I have a few things to say about his interview with Neil Mitchell. Mitchell made glib lines about media outlets campaigning for a political result. Is this what we want? A thread.
