This whole "the Nazis were leftists because they were National Socialists" business is revisionist nonsense. I was just looking at how the L.A. Times, a very conservative paper in those days, was editorializing about the Nazis during their ascent, in 1930:
I mean, come on.
1934:
From the annals of editorial cringeiness: In 1935, the L.A. Times ran a full essay by a Nazi doctor defending sterilization, which opened with his complaint that the commies and Marxists were trying to trick Americans into thinking the Nazis were bad.
(yikes)
Whew, this Nazi doctor pretty much lays it out. Essay in the L.A. Times, 1935, by K. Burchardi:
This guy is described as a "prominent Los Angeles physician." I haven't been able to find out what happened to him.
Turns out he was a pretty notorious Nazi in Los Angeles in the 1930s, and he went back to Germany in 1937... books.google.com/books?id=l04kD…
...where he was a hospital dermatologist. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11544948
