"Fracking is the dumbest way to get energy you can imagine." -Dr. David Suzuki talks about the tragic history of missed opportunities in the climate fight
"We're being faced with an existential crisis and we still dithering about it. We're not at the edge of the cliff we're over the edge. But that's not an excuse to not do anything, it matters what we do." -Suzuki
Coming from mining, where you need double lined tailings ponds, the fact fracking companies can store water right on the land is "mindblowing" -Karen Leven, environmental scientist who lives above fracking operations
"People feel powerless" says Leven who's neighbours wrote 50 letters of concern to fracking project. Company refused to do the studies they asked for and proceeded with the project 8 months after introducing it.
"What is happening in the Peace Region right now is at best extremely negligent." -Leven calls for a regional cumulative effects study.
"My colleague diagnosed his 10th case of neuroblastoma this summer & was very distressed because he felt the incidence was too high." -Dr. Ulrike Meyer. Only saw a few cases in years of work elsewhere.
"When the fracking tanks were removed and the well was inactive, his health improved." Meyer speaks of one of her patients.
Meyer lists another patient experiencing health problems who had a compressor station above her house and an open body of wastewater that was on fire 24/7 below.
"The industry needs to prove to the public they are not causing harm, not the other way around." -Meyer calls for a full public inquiry into the health effects of fracking before LNG Canada in Kitimat is built.
"Sometimes the rattling would get so loud I'd pack my family off for the night." - Farmer Karl Mattson says he discovered an H2S leak on his land
"It kind of woke me up," when Mattson's cows birthed a two-headed calf during a year of intensive flaring. Calf survived for only a few minutes.
"We get so much literature we really can't keep up. We're not scientists, we're farmers. A lot of us are considering leaving." Mattson's daughter is 6th generation on his farm, says he doesn't know if they'll stay.
"We used to call Alberta the Wild Wild West but they've had bigger setbacks than us for 15 years." -Mattson
"We got a knock on my door at my mom's house. It was a notice of claim from the Costal GasLink pipeline project. They delivered it to my dying mom's house." -Smogolgem from Laksamshu Clan of Wet'suwet'en
"I couldn't fathom the ice of continuing on the work that I was doing. We were watching people die in these communities. And at that time there were 13 proposed pipelines planning to cross through our territories." -Smogelgem
"The work that I was doing was of no consequence to the traditional decision-makers on our territories." -Smogelgem
"There's clients there right now who come looking for healing," Smogelgem tells stories of all the friends who've found healing at Unist'ot'en
"The place is a beacon of hope for people who are trying to stand up for the environment but it's also a beacon of hope for people who want to get healthy. The two go hand-in-hand." -Smogelgem
Smogelgem from Likhts'amisyu***
"People going out and trapping on their own territory in a healing journey are being harassed by police." -Smogelgem
Smogelgem says Spring and Fall Construction Camps planned for the Sovereign Likhts'amisyu Camp this year. Can find on Facebook for more info!
