Lots of attention on the @peabodyenergy announcing it has devalued the North Antelope Rochelle Mine (NARM) by $1.4 billion. Billion with B. For those following along, here is a thread with some background and additional context of why this is such a big deal. (1/?)
@peabodyenergy For good coverage of Peabody's NARM #coal mine announcement from yesterday, check out stories from @taykuy @MicahMaidenberg @camillereports @The_News_Record and @FT And here is our statement
@peabodyenergy @taykuy @MicahMaidenberg @camillereports @The_News_Record @FT The NARM #coal mine is huge. The largest in the world, in area. It takes 2 inspectors from @Wyoming_DEQ to be able to cover it all. You can see it from space with satellite imagery.

I know you are a nice person, @arsetechnica who means well, so this thread is for you.

I oppose the death penalty but I'm not an expert so I listen to and donate to experts like you.

I'm an expert on health & #climate impacts from #oilandgas with over 16 yrs experience.
I worked for #oilandgas.
I was a directly impacted landowner and a mineral owner, which is how I became a health and environmental advocate.
I've been OGI certified for over 6 yrs and have more experience behind an OGI camera than most regulators and industry.
First I thought: Oh, this #fracking is a mess and someone needs to make them do it right. I co-authored Drill Right Texas. I had good intentions, but insufficient information.

#oilandgas promised in 2005 to stop the emissions that turned my air brown.

It turns out today's been a pretty wild ride for our Twitter handle! 🥳

More seriously & since you're here, we've got *ADVICE*.

Faced w/ #COVID19, governments have a choice: Build resilient societies to prioritize health & safety of #PeopleNotPolluters OR bail out fossil fuels.
The bottom line: Today, several years of #fracking companies going bankrupt, several decades of coal's decline — these are what an UNMANAGED decline of the fossil fuel industry looks like.

It hurts workers & communities badly, while fossil fuel executives get golden parachutes.
Today's wild ride of oil futures prices is a big deal, but the industry isn't disappearing tomorrow.

Instead, the current madness is driven by a 1-2-3 punch of:

- Demand destruction from #COVID19
- Global price wars
- Structural decline from renewables & decarbonization

Absurdes aus der Welt des Kapitalismus: der #Ölpreis schmiert ab. In #Texas (#USA) $2/barrel, in #NewYork $5.48/barrel (WTI) bzw. $26.44 (Brent).
/MS

There’s a lot of talk about @BernieSanders decision to stay in the race.

I think he needs to stay in and I’m going to outline why in this thread.

As a people’s movement, so many of our positions are overwhelmingly supported by the majority (cont.)
Medicare For All
15 dollar min wage
Green New Deal
Marijuana legalization and criminal justice reform
Ban on #Fracking
Billionaires and corporations paying their fair share of taxes.

Americans support these ideas and they need to be fought for.

Especially in this pandemic.
It is so clear that we need a fundamental shift in the way our government and our society works.

@joebiden’s campaign represent NONE of these things.

But we have enough delegates to create real leverage in the party. We have to organize that leverage and keep pushing.

Predictably, @JohnFetterman used jobs as the reason why we shouldn't #banfracking in his con to my pro on the issue in this @PhillyInquirer op-ed. Just as predictably, he used the piece to promote #RestorePA. (thread)

inquirer.com/opinion/commen…
Along the way, he invoked the purity argument against the anti-fracking movement and, by extension, the climate movement.

It is the purity of the firefighter trying to save the home.
Meanwhile, the impure side that he aligns with is not taking the approach of achieving the same goal, just more slowly. He and his boss may use that rhetoric when defending their indefensible position, but #RestorePA is just one of the ways they are actually fanning the flames.

BOMBSHELL: deep dive by investigative reporter ⁦@JustinNobel⁩ into radiation risks from #fracking.

Part of a years’ long research project by one of our finest reporters.

Beyond Fracking: Oil-and-Gas Industry’s Toxic Waste Is Radioactive rollingstone.com/politics/polit…
I can’t stress enough how important these findings are. Sometimes journalism can go where science can’t. E.g. Justin tracked down a worker in Ohio who had quietly collected and stored samples of fracking waste from the various loads he had hauled over the years.
Earth’s bedrock contains a whole periodic chart of elements, including some radioactive ones. When you blow it up using water as the club (fracking) those elements end up in the briny wastewater that comes up to the surface and requires disposal. Science has documented this...

As seen in the Dulles airport. This ad from the American Petroleum Institute—US oil/gas trade association—is straight-up disinformation that perpetuates two big lies. Quick explainer thread—in case you need to unmask this ubiquitous untruth for any of your holiday houseguests. 1/
*CLEANER ENERGY*

Compared to what? Coal? Nope natural gas is not cleaner than coal. Methane leaks + nitrogen oxides make gas power plants and upstream infrastructure a major source of smog. Clear evidence shows health harms among people who live near gas wells and gas plants. 2/
Here is a good summary of air pollution from #fracking operations. psr.org/wp-content/upl… 3/

1/ FRACKING THREAD. I’m here at the Ithaca Community School for Music and Arts to hear world methane expert @howarth_cornell present new science on #fracking and the climate crisis. Will try to live tweet. Full house! Lots of legendary grassroots leaders here.@MothersOutFront
2/ Howarth introduced by local elected official Irene Weiser: we admire Bob’s activism as much as his science. His earlier work on the importance of methane in the climate story was at first ridiculed by industry but findings have held up and are now considered mainstream.
3/ we will hit 1.5 degrees warming in the 10 yes. To keep it there we MUST reduce methane. Methane has increased 170% due to human activity but with a half life of only 12 yrs in atmosphere, climate can response quickly to methane reductions. Not so CO2 which lasts a century.

1/ A SHORT FRACKING THREAD

A triple whammy of terrifying climate news today shows the paramount planetary importance of STOPPING U.S. FRACKING OPERATIONS.

First from Axios:

As climate change worsens, America blows past the world in oil and natural gas axios.com/america-blows-…
2/ In other words: The US is now #1 in the world in extracting, burning, exporting oil and gas. The resulting emissions is pushing the world past the limit on temp rise—1.5 degrees—necessary to avoid runaway unfixable catastrophe.

US oil and gas is blowing it for everybody.
3/ Fracking is still called “unconventional” drilling but in fact it is now the dominant method for getting oil and gas out of the bedrock. In the US, fracking accounts for most new oil and gas production, says the US Energy Information Administration. eia.gov/todayinenergy/…

Some of my photos of #fracking action over the last near-decade:

2011: A protest at the N.Ireland Assembly, back when some of the only people who knew about fracking in the UK were the residents of Co. Fermanagh, who were on the front line. (I was the grim reaper for a day!)
2012: Handing in an anti-fracking petition to No.10 with anti-fracking groups across the UK. (Yes I know - some of the people in this photo, we've found out since then, are deeply problematic...)
2013: One of the first big protests against #fracking in #Balcombe, Sussex. Charles Metcalfe - Balcombe resident, wine critic, Telegraph reader - giving a rousing speech to the crowd, demonstrating the breadth of the resistance. Followed by @chiversdanny right after :)

However, it is hard for #Brent and oil equities to go up on declining inventories while demand/macro weakens (macro outlook uncertain). #OOTT #WTI @HFI_Research
