begrudgingly complying with the laws about public access and transparency is not actually the same thing as engaging with the public!
i don’t mean this as a gotcha or a criticism of the individual at @CvilleCityHall whose job it is to post the notices, but there is a problem. it isn’t just the lack of convenience of meetings not being noticed online, actual legal notices of public meetings aren’t being made.
here’s a member of the towing advisory board talking about a meeting that was supposed to take place and only didn’t because the board itself failed to show up. and here’s the notice board at city hall that same day - no notice of such a meeting.
i have no way of knowing how many other city boards and commissions are meeting without proper public notice. the city’s website for many of these bodies is out of date and lacks meaningful information for residents interested in the business they may or may not be conducting.
it seems like it would be absolutely within the power of city council to ask every currently authorized board and commission to issue a report to council about their business. every body should be reviewed by the city to ensure they are operating productively and lawfully.
there is a lot of scrutiny on the police civilian review board. but where is this public scrutiny when it comes to the DOZENS of boards operating with the city’s authorization?
audit every board. what is their mission? what are they accomplishing? what public interest do they serve? who serves on them? what are their goals? are they receiving any public input or oversight?
