Some observations about Christians and the restaurant industry. I worked in the restaurant industry throughout High School and my first 4 years in college. I learned a lot about Christians while working as a waiter and a manager. Sundays and the church rush were terrible. 1/
Many waitstaff did not want to work on Sundays. Primarily because the Christians would exit their churches and head to our small town family restaurant. They'd sit at their individual large tables, talk about how great church was, while making our jobs incredibly difficult. 2/
They came from several churches in town. Each talking about how great the sermon was or how special the music sounded, all the while demanding much from the waitstaff, usually having complicate orders with many separate checks. Frequently leaving a small tip or no tip at all. 3/
I was a Christian at the time. I loved Jesus dearly. I remember one of the waitresses in our restaurant Crying in the back of the kitchen after she was left 5 dollars for waiting on a table of 20 Christians, who had demanded drinks, meals and hand scooped ice cream desserts. 4/
They never acknowledge her humanity, as they talked about the wonderful sermon they had just heard and demanded their coffee refills and their food to be warmed up and their ice cream cones to have one more scope or a little more whipped cream. She served them with grace. 5/
Their response was to carelessly throw a five dollar bill on the table as the headed out the door, leaving a thoroughly trashed side room and a young high school waitress crying in the kitchen. This is my memory of the witness of Sunday restaurant Christians. 6/
I remember thinking what if every one of these Christians believed that when they entered this restaurant they were entering a sacred temple, that it was a holy place, full of people God had called them to serve, love and bless. What if they believed church had not ended? 7/
Most of the teenagers who worked in that restaurant were not Christians & the witness of Christian clearly demonstrated we had nothing to offer them. We were not kinder or more generous or more gracious. We were just a little more demanding. This is why I always tip extra. 8/8
