Most objections to this opinion of mine seem to reflect a view of communion as an expression of individual relationship with God. It certainly is that. And if that's all it is, obviously the venues for participation are broad. But the biblical picture is bigger, I think.
It is connected to (meaningful) church membership and orderliness, which (to me) makes the exercise of communion most normative for the gathered *body*. Obviously there are concessions made in wisdom (ie. some members may be absent, the question of shut-ins, etc) . . .
But I personally don't see the biblical witness (which extends beyond the last supper and Acts, by the way) reflecting an amorphous "religious ceremony" good for plug-and-play any place where Christian stuff is being done. The examples of table fencing alone indicate this. /end
Wait, 1 more thing: If you practice communion at your retreats or small groups or did at your wedding, I'm not judging you. I disagree with you, but I'm not making any statement about your faith, I promise. We can disagree on this and both of us keep on living. ;-)
