“I think spying on a political campaign is a big deal,” Barr says, explaining why he’s ordered an investigation into the origins of the Russia investigation at the FBI and intelligence agencies. “I think spying did occur,” he adds when Sen. Shaheen asks for clarification.
The convergence of the talking points of the Office of the Attorney General and George Papadopoulos is really something to behold.
At the end of the hearing, Barr backed off his most sensational claim.
With this contradiction, Barr inoculated himself against any potential legal liability for his testimony. However, he planted a seed in the political discourse with his initial statement, and as a practical matter, all these stories aren't about to be retracted.
An hour after the hearing ended, NYT is not taking notice of Barr's walk-back of his sensational spying claim on its front page or in the article's head matter. nytimes.com/2019/04/10/us/…
Two hours later, the landing page NYT headline lends even more credibility to this unsubstantiated and subsequently withdrawn claim from Barr.
Threading this in to make clear how Barr linked "spying" and "unauthorized surveillance" in his exchange with @brianschatz.
