This is *always* the quintessential David Brooks column I think about. It combines undiluted arrogance with what he sees as genuine compassion wrapped up in an excuse to show off (weaponize?) learnedness. It is just... *chef's kiss*.
I had to dig it up for fun. Y'all... I grew up in trailer parks. I'm a first-generation college grad. When read this, I thought: "Holy christ, is this really what people like David Brooks think of me?"
