We are in Te Papa's reading room to hear @VLeachman talk about Copyright basics, Creative Commons and Free Image Sources.
Legendary Rights Manager @VLeachman "I'm not a lawyer and this is not legal advice" but years of experience...
Commissioners of art works usually retain copyright unless otherwise stated in contacts
Copyright is automatically applied on creation of artworks.
This monkey's selfie has no copyright because only art created by people can be under copyright (or programmers of computer art)
Copyright laws of the country you are reproducing art in are the ones you need to abide by.

The internet is the biggest digital copier!
Think of copyright as an onion with layers. A book has words, images, typography and cover design copyright layers, which may all have different life spans.
This sculpture has copyright but the image of the sculpture also has copyright
Some more in-depth information in our Copyright Webinars here: librariesaotearoa.org.nz/copyright-act-…
Digitised, exact copies of originals do NOT create a new digital copyright even when much labour is applied.
Colourised digital images that add an additional layer of creativity earn a copyright on the colouring but not the original b&w image.
Creative commons allows for a set of licences
Share alike asks people creating derivative works to use the same level of access.
A derivative work is one such as Duchamp's Mona Lisa with mustache
Open GLAM movement is opening up out-of-copyright culture
Some typical concerns:
@Te_Papa has 100,000 high Res images available @NLNZ has a reuse policy 300,000 at Auckland War Memorial
@DigitalNZ has a great commercial use collection of images
Flickr is a great resource too, use advanced search with filter
Some recommendations from Victoria blog.tepapa.govt.nz/2016/03/01/get…
Don't use Flickr as your repository for your archive as you don't have control over the platform. Recent changes have seen many images taken off for non-pro users.
