I'm SHOCKED by the level of misinformation (lies?) in this article economist.com/leaders/2019/0…. I don't even know where to start with unpacking the untruths of this piece. A few examples in this thread.
"in developing countries private schools are better—and much more efficient". FALSE. Absolutely no conclusive evidence in that sense, rather the contrary. E.g. Ashley, @JosephWales1, @PaulineMRose et. al bit.ly/15OKajk or the work of @PrachiSrivas oxfamblogs.org/fp2p/its-compl…
"Chile, Pakistan & the Netherlands have all demonstrated that big, properly designed and managed voucher systems can work well [to address inequality]" FALSE. These are among the most unequal & segregated education systems in the world! @VergerAntoni &others have shown it clearly
" Vietnam, [...] also has the fastest-growing private sector." WHAT is the source of this!? A quick look at data.uis.unesco.org shows that it's FALSE. Even officially decreasing at higher level. What would researchers at @ird_fr say to that?
Many on Twitter were quick to jump on @OxfamIFIs @kmaloufbous for perceived cherry-picking of evidence. Fair enough to have a discussion, helped to clarify Oxfam did not actually cherry-pick. Where is the indignation of @Fihi_maFihi @PaulAtherton13 @john_rendel @felbarrera here!?
It's fine for @TheEconomist to express opinions. But not to tell lies. This magazine was (rightly) the first to denounce the manipulation of facts behind the Brexit. It's now using exactly similar process for its own ideology. @TheEconomist is becoming the tabloid of the elite.
The literature review published by @OxfamIFIs @kmaloufbous this week, as research in Pakistan by @idirfamo & many more show the same. There is still some level of debate, but it can absolutely not be said that these countries "have demonstrated" anything regarding inequality!
