Attention is not and never has been a proxy for learning and yet because it's the thing we can kind of, sort of, a little bit measure, some are willing to overlook this fact.

The iconic pose of a figure deep in thought (Rodin's "The Thinker), is not allowed in no excuses charter schools and would be scored as problematic behavior by the attention-scoring facial recognition algorithms. Why are we allowing this torture to be done to students?

I see the Webby Awards have been announced. As the editor of @mcsweeneys when the site won a Webby for best writing in 2005, I hope people know that entering the awards is prohibitively expensive for the vast majority of websites. When I realized the cost, we stopped entering.
The @mcsweeneys site is better than ever under the leadership of @crmonks, but he's not winning a Webby because he's funneling the money not towards a vanity award, but the site and its contributors.
Don't even get me started on what the Webbys cost if you're a nominee and are going to show up for the actual awards show. It would've been half my annual salary at the time. It was a joke then. I can't imagine it's improved.

This is both a disturbing look into President Trump's failure to faithfully discharge the duties of his office and a transparent attempt by Kirstjen Nielsen to rehabilitate her reputation under the cover of anonymity. nytimes.com/2019/04/24/us/…
Here is the sourcing for the story. The former official is almost certainly Nielsen herself. Given that Maggie Haberman is on the byline, KellyAnne Conway is likely one of the current officials, possibly SHS as well.
This is no doubt an important story the public is better off knowing, but when all of this comes out in the wash once Trump is gone, I hope we remember how these sourcing and power dynamics worked to protect so many of the malevolent actors in the Trump White House.

Kudos to the Times for publishing this @jaycaspiankang piece that's putatively about Mayor Pete, but is more accurately an indictment of elite media identity politics as practiced at the New York Times and elsewhere. nytimes.com/2019/04/24/mag…
I read the piece wondering if Frank Bruni recognizes himself in the critique. I wonder how popular Kang is around the Old Grey Lady offices.
I just love the "bite the hand" tone of @jaycaspiankang's piece. I mean, he calls out the readers of his own publication. He's not particularly coy about his message.

They are connected because of the acceptance of softness and lies. Period. A lot of yall accept that fake ass shit because of certain emotional hangups you cant get over.
And yea, I understand alot of our generation has gone through some shit - not the worst shit in the world but it was pretty bad.
That isnt any excuse to be blind to the fact that yall accept lies and evil in our time.
A lot of liberals were proven correct about the Iraq War and the neo-conservitives But these same liberals got caught up in the media success, rise of talk radio and neo conservative news, and they and their elite structures became neo conservatives themselves.
