Our @HarvardHBS MBA course on #ManagingTheFutureOfWork is underway!

I share a few key ideas from each class that sparked conversation.

Class 22 looked at @CareerWiseCO's implementation of apprenticeships in Colorado & expansion to new states (case 319-001, forthcoming).
A recent report coauthored by @JosephBFuller and @Burning_Glass estimate 3m or more jobs in the US could benefit thru apprenticeships and provide holders greater upward mobility… While apprenticeships are popular in Europe, the models need to be fit to the US context to work
Adapting the Swiss model, CWC shifts high school juniors & seniors in CO into part-time apprenticeships in key industries (eg adv mfg, IT, fin services) to provide career-based training & skills development. Founder @noelforcolorado explained why he pursued the model:
This model will receive lots of attention in the months ahead as @hickenlooper runs for President and argues how programs like CWC, started when he was governor of CO, can help nationally build a better economy for workers: cnn.com/2019/03/20/opi…
Class debated 2 tradeoffs: 1) urban focus v statewide and 2) SMEs v larger businesses

Class argued for statewide (need in rural areas even if more costly) & that SMEs are best to start (closer to communities & easier to involve)... but to grow, larger firms are necessary.
Having proven its concept in CO, CWC is looking to expand (within Colorado & nationally).

Noel feels a real urgency to do this - even if CWC's model isn't perfectly refined:
Class considered the challenges and approaches to both types of expansion.

At the state level, established workforces (unions) loomed as a potential obstacle. Could CWC get them on board by pitching its apprentices as potential new members?
Nationally, is the best model to license their playbook? Give consulting support to interested groups? Offer guidelines on what *not* to do? The key consideration became not diluting CWC's brand and success.

Noel discussed new states' enthusiasm for picking up CWC's approach:
