If someone takes the idea of “consent of the governed” seriously, they should try to think of govt policies in the same vein as advanced medical directives. What are you willing to have Gov’t do to you — especially if/when you lack the power to object?

But, unlike an actual advance medical directive where you are presumably unconscious while decisions are being made for you, and things done to you, by people you trusted. . .
With govt, you must now witness and be subject to the consequences of delegating power over your life to other people who might be strangers, who hold different values, or who might even hate you and your values.
Just try to imagine an advanced medical directive where you remain conscious, but cannot immediately and without great cost/time/procedure revoke the directive. Now suppose your trusted designee delegates his/her power over your health to someone else, or some group?
Now you have Elizabeth Warren deciding whether you really need two kidneys while some other people need kidney transplants.
Or Eric Swalwell, who wants to experiment with your auto-immune system because he believes in a fantasy world where infectious diseases will somehow cease to exist.
Or Peter Buttigieg, who thinks your recovery will work out better if you are compelled to volunteer time in the burn ward or childcare center.
Or Kamala Harris, who wants to inflict medical malpractice on all patients in her hospital to achieve equal outcomes and make up for past instances of malpractice.
When people want government to control their:
Healthcare,
Self-defense,
Housing,
Transportation,
Income,
Education,
Nutrition,
Career,
And the Weather,
Ask yourself if you would give any politician you know an irrevocable advance medical directive. Because you have.
