If you are not “bad,” and I agree that many men aren’t, then you should understand why interrupting conversations about harm with, “but I don’t do that,” serves no purpose other than to prioritize, recenter, and elevate yourself, which is how privilege is passively perpetuated.
It’s objectively false that a privileged person will experience some detriment if they don’t actively distinguish themselves from the “bad guys.” Marginalized people lack the social power to create those consequences. You’re talking over them to defend yourself from phantom harm.
TLDR: stop prioritizing your ego over the harms inflicted upon of whole groups of people and instead use your privilege to stop those harms from occurring.
PS - this is a primary factor in distinguishing generalizations about marginalized groups from those of privileged groups: privilege has power to create consequences and further marginalize. Also, passive marginalized existence does not perpetuate harm.
