1/3 The backstop is an integral part of the present Withdrawal Agreement. Leaving it out of the WA Bill does not make it vanish.

Rather than postpone implementation of the ugly truths of the WA, we need the Govt to seek replacement: #MalthouseCompromise

2/3 We voted for the Brady Amendment: the PM has a mandate to renegotiate. Voting for the WAIB is voting to implement the current WA.

If the Govt intends to remove the Backstop, it needs removing from the WA, or the UK will be bound in international law to introduce it later
3/3 Postponing the implementation of the most unpalatable parts of the Withdrawal Agreement in the hope they disappear is the legislative equivalent of fat free chocolate, headache free wine or exercising while sitting down.

This is not a way to ratify a treaty.

This idea of a hard v soft Brexit is the ludicrous invention of opponents of leaving.

The logic of our democratic decision leads to a relationship of the kind the EU offered last year:

1. We are still in the EU nearly 3 years after the Referendum. We accepted the Art 50 route. We then accepted another 18 months of implementation period.
2. We accepted ECJ jurisdiction over the agreement including over how much we pay and EU citizens rights.

“Indicative votes” are a dreadful idea, apparently to force upon us what could not be achieved through the subterfuge of the Withdrawal Agreement: Customs Union (CU), against the Conservative manifesto

In any meaningful sense, Brexit would be lost

The excuse, free circulation of goods, is not achieved with *a* or *the* CU

*A* CU, requires movement certificates into the EU

In both *a* and *the* CU, all checks other than rules of origin are derived from the rules of the EU “single market” (SM)

So to get free circulation through CU, you need the SM too

That means no scope for domestic regulatory changes or independent trade policy: all countries will need us to have regulatory flexibility to do trade deals

1/3 Ok: let's send the right signals. (But is the EU really hanging on a non-binding motion at 5pm on a Thursday afternoon?)

Conservative MPs really ought not to be associated with anything, express or implied, which seems to take no deal off the table.
2/3 Compromising no deal would be the daftest negotiating strategy and not in the national interest.

Today's storm in a teacup only arises because the Government's motion is not neutral. This unnecessary carry on is wanted by no one.
3/3: The right thing would have been a neutral motion and the adoption of #MalthouseCompromise by the Government, around which there is a majority.

Today's votes are a distraction from the clear 1st step to a deal: replacing the backstop with alternative arrangements

1. The implementation of Brexit has been an unmitigated disaster, characterised by grievous policy errors and inept politics. This is a thread from a UK perspective about what happened and a little of the why.
2. In the beginning, the 2016 Referendum provided Brexit’s only two inescapable facts.

Leave won but Leave only closely won.

The latter is a crucial point whose importance was seldom acknowledged in practice, the result of which proved the first of Brexit’s hamartic flaws.
3. In the aftermath of the referendum there was considerable empty space to determine what Brexit meant.

David Cameron resigned. There was, no plan from the Government or the Leave Campaign.

The most prominent Brexiteers sabotaged each other’s leadership campaigns.

The draft deal on the Northern Ireland backstop, which was agreed last night by UK and EU officials (as I reported) - but not yet by the UK cabinet and EU 27 governments - would I think be acceptable to the DUP, the NI unionist party that props up May.
It includes a provision to massively increase checks on food and livestock flowing from the GB mainland to NI. But these happen already. Importantly Barnier, for the EU, has “de-dramatised” regulatory checks to the satisfaction of May...
...- by agreeing that there need not be any checks on goods flowing east-west across the Irish Sea to NI outside of the “marketplace”.
