If you're thinking, what is the Equal Rights Amendment and don't women have all the same rights and protections as men? No, they do not. The only right that the Constitution explicitly guarantees women is the right to vote.
If ERA was amended to the Constitution, it would be explicit for once and all - you cannot violate a person's civil rights based on their sex.
This is a big deal.
P.S. The hearing gets a little star power - @PattyArquette, who has long advocated for passage of the #ERA, will also speak to lawmakers on the committee tomorrow,

As ranking member, Rep. Johnson of Louisiana has been given the floor by other Republicans on the committee today and left to ask the Qs.
Johnson: The word "sex" in the federal civ rights law includes self professed gender identity, does sex in ERA includes gender identity?
Sullivan: ERA prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex. If there's discrimination on basis of sex in the treatment of LGBTQ+, then that will count as unconstitutional under ERA.
The proper textual reading does include discrimination on orientation or transgender identity, she adds.
Dr. Spearman says she agrees. On the basis of sex, gender identity is a new way of saying "this is who I am."

The 19th Amendment, - the right to vote regardless of sex - was never expanded beyond voting boundaries. ERA would prohibit ALL discrimination. - Sullivan notes.
Spearman, who is black, a woman and a veteran adds: Whether its about sexism, racism, or homophobia, "we always parse words about whether someone has the right to equality. " Civil rights in the US were ratified because "it was the right thing to do."
The #ERA should be considered in the same light, Spearman says.

SCOOP: The Flynn intel Group has submitted thousands of pages of documents to the House Judiciary Committee’s Trump investigation, part of a wave of responses arriving this week.
