Hi @GiladEdelman I saw that you put me in an article arguing that conservatives are in denial about white supremacy. Might I suggest that you’re barking up the wrong tree? (Brief thread follows): washingtonmonthly.com/2019/05/02/con…
First, regarding Poway, I mentioned the shooter and the hero who stopped the shooting in an article about masculinity for no purpose other than to demonstrate that there are good and bad forms of aggression, not to minimize the source of his aggression: nationalreview.com/2019/05/unders…
Second, far from minimizing white supremacy, I’ve sounded the alarm bell loudly, clearly, and repeatedly. For example, I recently wrote this big print piece for our mag: nationalreview.com/magazine/2018/…
Third, my own family’s story has brought this home in a deeply personal and painful way. I tell part of it here: theatlantic.com/family/archive…
And here’s more context on our ordeal during the 2016 campaign: nationalreview.com/2016/10/donald…
I won’t be presumptuous and say that I’ve done more than any other conservative to raise the alarm about the alt-right. Many have. I will say that I’ve done my best. I have many flaws. Denial about white supremacy is not one of them.
Finally, my colleague @jimgeraghty is not guilty of that sin either. He is as thoughtful and good and decent a person as you’ll ever encounter. I’d urge you to be more careful with serious charges. We’re all trying to wrestle with the challenge of these shootings. /end
