Thread: I want to add a quick word about the character debate raging on after @MittRomney’s accurate and entirely righteous statement in response to the Mueller report. As I’ve written at length, I share his sentiments. I’m happy POTUS isn’t a traitor and disgusted by his lies /1
In 2016 Americans faced a tough choice — vote for deeply-flawed and dishonest major-party nominees or vote third party/independent. I chose to vote independent. I don’t, however, begrudge the different choice, HOWEVER /2
Most thoughtful Christians told me their vote in no way ratified Trump’s character; it was a vote against Hillary in the hope that Trump’s policies would be better. They assured me they’d have no qualms calling out Trump as POTUS. This has (largely) not been the case. /3
There are two big reasons for this. First, there is extreme pressure to get behind Trump, often exerted through vicious, mocking personal attacks if you offer even small criticisms. Lots of people don’t want to deal with this. It’s easier just to stay quiet (or cheer Trump). /4
Second — and more importantly — Hillary may have been vanquished, but the right sees a new Hillary every day. They can look at the liberal landscape and “nutpick” the worst excesses and say, “You don’t want (AOC, CNN, MSNBC, Omar etc.) to win, do you?” /5
So the “binary choice” paradigm extends into infinity. Each act of critique of Trump is seen as undermining him in his allegedly valiant fight against the Left (really, he’s weak and sad, pitching fits more than fighting fights). So, now, here we are. /6
The truth about Trump enrages people. Just enrages them. Not just because it undermines Trump, but also (for some) it reminds them of the incredible compromises they’ve made. The truth convicts, and when people are convicted without repentance, they lash out. /7
Every day will bring another Hillary. There will never be an “easy” moment to say what’s clearly true. MAGA-people will make sure you pay a price. They’ll insult and revile you. But Matthew 5:11 still applies. Believe it, and have faith. The truth will set you free. /end
