As a @Harvard alumna and current student, I have been so deeply disappointed with how the university and my department have handled this issue so far. #ExternalReviewNow
But I am also encouraged by and deeply appreciative of the efforts of those students and some professors who are on the frontlines for fighting for change.
Sadly, I wasn't surprised by this story when it first broke. I'm aware of cases beyond this reporting in which someone seems to have been more or less forced out of the department -- and ultimately decided to leave the field entirely. chronicle.com/interactives/h…
Perhaps some of @Harvard's resistance to the idea of an external review stems from concerns over what else might be uncovered in terms of cultural and systemic failures by the department and university as a whole? Regardless, it's troubling. sites.google.com/view/externalr…
I have nothing but positive things to say about my advisors and professors. I've been very lucky to have a great experience at Harvard, for the most part. And I never directly interacted with Jorge Domínguez.
Here's why. I distinctly remember that, at some point, I was considering taking a seminar with Jorge Domínguez. I googled his name, hoping to learn more about this research. This letter to the editor in @thecrimson from 1983 came up. thecrimson.com/article/1983/1…
In 1983, several @Harvard students wrote: "Based on our understanding of the facts, we believe that Jorge I Dominguez is not fit to continue as a professor at Harvard and that his continued presence is a moral stain on Harvard's reputation."
I chose not to take that class with him at the time. Their letter continued: "Professor Dominguez's reported actions and the lack of a commensurate University response call into question Harvard's dedication to its professed commitment to protect students from sexual harassment."
Today, decades later, @Harvard students are still and again questioning the university's dedication to protecting its students. Harvard can and must do so much better. #TimesUp #ExternalReviewNow
