Imagine this for a scifi:

The whole of humanity is stuck on one spaceship we can't get out of, speeding through the vast empty space. 1/8
We've been on the voyage so long as a species that we've already almost forgotten we live in the coldness of space, our lives only made possible by the ship's support systems – which we haven't built ourselves but inherited. 2/8
On one Monday afternoon we learn that a third of our life-support system is about to be wiped out in just a few upcoming decades. And to make it even worse, no one fully understands how the life-support system works as a whole and how the components interact. 3/8
So any of the components in the third that's going to vanish might be the critical ones. 4/8
Simultaneously the climate control system is also starting to fail: many parts of the spaceship are about to become intolerably hot or otherwise ridden with extreme variations of climate, making it difficult to allocate everyone in the more temperate parts of the ship. 5/8
And the mindbending plot twist at the end is that there are no aliens, AIs, robot uprising or interdimensional evil entities to blame. We've broken the systems ourselves. 6/8
Except this is not scifi.

This is the reality painted by the IPBES & IPCC reports, reflecting the overwhelming scientific consensus on where we are as a species on this spaceship Earth. 7/8
And anyone who's watched plenty of scifi can tell that when spaceship's critical systems start to fail, it's time to roll up the sleeves and start fixing things right about fucking now. 8/8
(But hey, by all means let's instead keep on guessing the name of the latest royal baby and arguing who sits where in one tiny parliament while the support systems crumble behind us…)
