Just what we needed: another screed about "political correctness" at Middlebury, Brown, and Sarah Lawrence funded by the Charles Koch Foundation that completely ignores the right-wing assault on higher education, particularly the humanities. /1
Perhaps Nichols missed this story about the actions of the Charles Koch Foundation at George Mason University, which raises concerns about "donors influence in academic matters." /2

And maybe he missed this one about how UW Stevens Point almost lost a number of humanities departments to "create a regional university that is more career focused." /3

Or the broader trend of state legislatures cutting back their support for higher education, which threatens "access and equity." 4/

And maybe he didn't catch this story the same journal that discussed the Koch brothers highly ideological efforts to reward publicly defunded universities with their own funds, provided that they hire economists who celebrate free markets. /5

The bloodless view put forward here is that students enter into a "contract in which the professors are obligated to educate them and they are obligated to fulfill...requirements." 6/
But the university is also an intellectual and political site and, while not a democracy, should certainly encourage democratic practices , including the right of dissent and protest. That's part of free speech too. /7
According to Nichols, students should "accept instruction, rather than to give it." But this one-way model of education, which may work in some classrooms, does not seem a good framework for democratic citizenship on campus or elsewhere. 8/
Student protest is healthy. This doesn't mean that other members of the university community, including other students, are obligated to agree with groups of protesters or to meet their demands, and I know of no university where that regularly happens. /9
I was very proud to see students at my former university, U. of South Carolina, peacefully, effectively, and successfully protest the presidential selection process. /10

Since the election of 2016, I’ve seen variations of statements of this sort: that Trump won because of mistakes by Obama, or that If Obama had done things differently, Trumpism wouldn’t have emerged. I respectfully disagree. /1
The first thing to remember is that Trump didn’t “win” the popular vote. He lost by 3 million to a flawed candidate who was treated incredibly unfairly by the media—and, yes, I’m looking at you, @nytimes. /2
Moreover, if not for voter suppression in many states, Clinton would have won the popular vote by significantly more and almost certainly would have won the electoral college as well. /3

Rarely have I been so excited to have one of my tweets “liked.” I’m teaching about Curt Flood this week & I’m hoping that his genius & bravery will be more widely appreciated. He connected the civil rights & labor movements in important ways. Thanks ⁦@curtfloodjr⁩.
When he brought the case that became Flood v. Kuhn, he said, for example, ""I think the change in black consciousness in recent years has made me more sensitive to injustice in every area of my life."
Here's a link to an excellent recent article by the great @WCRhoden arguing that Curt Flood should be honored by Major League Baseball. I couldn't agree more.

On this day in 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play on a major league baseball team since the 1880s. As Jules Tygiel points out, many newspapers minimized the moment, as in this Boston Globe headline. /1

When he was mentioned in the headlines, it was often to point out that he went 0-3. (As opposed to his debut with the Montreal Royals, the previous season when he had a monster opener.) Note also the gratuitous reference to Robinson's "piano key smile."/3

From @ALEC_states talking points given to members this year: "No one individual or organization makes up more than two percent of ALEC’s budget." This is what they are telling legislators to say when asked questions about its #Koch funding. It is just not accurate. #ALECInDC
(2) There are a number of big inaccuracies in these talking points. This is doing legislators a disservice if they rely on these thinking that they are accurate. ALEC surely knows they are giving legislative members inaccurate information.
(3) The statement about no single funder giving more than two percent of the budget, was provided so legislators could respond to questions about the power of the Koch brothers and other big donor over ALEC.

Throughout the 19th/early 20th century, right-wing movements in Europe were populist. The right-wing has *always* been a kind of populist authoritarianism. The Nazi Party was not a break with the older right-wing, but its apotheosis. Jeet has no clue:
Schmitt's "moderate" period was very early in his life, during the 1910s. By the 1920s he was NOT "trying to protect Weimar from extremism" as he later claimed. He was an authoritarian enemy of Weimar who sought to undermine it: cairn-int.info/abstract-E_RFS…
The attitudes below were typical of Jeet's supposedly "order-loving" conservatives during Weimar. They were saboteurs with a deeply conspiratorial view of history who were willing to resort to radical measures to undermine and destroy the liberal republic.

It is no surprise Twitter targets accounts for “wrong think” or as we on the #Right like to call it “free-think” this is because of two events which are now totally and utterly inextricably linked, #Brexit and #Trump and the Establishment have been rocked to the core. 2/15
