Today, Republicans introduced their #FairnessforAll Act which purports to protect LGBTQ civil rights, but in practice would enshrine & federally sanction anti-LGBTQ discrimination in nearly every way - healthcare, social services, housing, employment, education & more.
#FairnessforAll Act would also roll back EXISTING protections against discrimination based on race, sex and religion – undermining key parts of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 – AND could preempt certain state & local protections. It is a truly terrible bill.
Apparently the sponsors of #FairnessforAll Act believe its ok to be LGBTQ as long as you take your business elsewhere, seek medical care elsewhere, are educated elsewhere and that LGBTQ people should simply exist – elsewhere.…

Welcome to the Member of Congress Tracking Report for the week ending November 10, 2019. With Congress on recess this week, we are going to do things a bit differently this week. We are going to take a dive into #McConnellsGraveyard.
#MoCTrack 1/33
#GOP keeps trotting out their tired talking point about the “do-nothing-Dems” and all we can concentrate on is #Impeachment.

What you’ll find below are 30 bills of the 300+ that #McConnell has stalled in the Senate.

#MoCTrack #DemCast 2/33…
HR 1 - #ForThePeople

A bill that would improve voting rights, fix campaign finance regulations, and mandate ethics and accountability reforms.

This morning the Supreme Court is hearing three cases to determine whether #LGBTQ workers are protected from discrimination under our nation’s sex non-discrimination laws, a decision that will have major consequences for our nation. #SCOTUS
Someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity is intrinsically linked with their sex. It is impossible to discriminate against someone in a same-sex relationship without, by definition, taking their sex into consideration.
Same goes for gender identity. It is impossible to discriminate against someone for not expressing themselves in a way that aligns with how you perceive their sex without considering... their sex.

We’ve made great progress in the last 20 years: decriminalizing homosexuality, marriage equality, rapidly growing trans+ visibility & awareness.

But we STILL don’t have a federal law explicitly protecting LGBTQ folks from discrimination in employment, housing or public spaces.
I’m proud Washington State protects LGBTQ people in state law AND:

☑️ protects queer youth from the vile practice of "conversion therapy"
☑️ bans health insurance exclusions for trans people
☑️ allows trans & non-binary people to accurately list their gender identity on forms

1/ Another ridiculous lie from @realDonaldTrump.

From day one, @HouseDemocrats have been focused on delivering on our promises to the American people. Meanwhile, Mitch McConnell calls himself the “grim reaper” and refuses to even consider our bills.
2/ We have the receipts to back it up.
We passed #HR1, the For The People Act — the most ambitious set of ethics & election reforms in a generation. It gets big money out of politics, protects voting rights & strengthens ethics laws.
3/ We passed the #EqualityAct to ensure #LGBTQ Americans get the same legal protection as everyone else.

Hurt feelings and offense-taking play a big role in shutting down, censoring, and misdirecting conversations about just about everything to do with women these days: #abortion rights, #periodstigma, and your basic uterus-having, sex-based anything and everything.
The idea seems to be that rather than make some people uncomfortable or offend them by reminding them of what their bodies are not, it's kinder for women to fudge the truth, censor the ways we speak about the realities of our lives, or, better yet, be quiet.
Here's the thing, though.

Women, doesn't it hurt and offend us when our inescapable reality -- being female and all that entails -- is dismissed and womanhood is reduced to an identity or a feeling?

"The Equality Act would violate religious freedom"

Actually, @taylorswift13 already responded to those claims in the letter she sent to her senator on June 1
"One cannot take the position that one supports a community, while condemning it in the next breath as going against "conscience" or "parental rights"."

-@taylorswift13, in support of the Equality Act
"This statement implies there's something morally wrong with being anything other than heterosexual and cisgender, which is an incredibly harmful message to send to a nation full of healthy and loving families with same-sex, nonbinary or transgender parents, sons or daughers"

For each day of #PrideMonth I’ll highlight a different LGBT Jewish icon.

1. Edie Windsor

Her Supreme Court case overturned the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013, paving the way for marriage equality and a host of other LGBT legal protections.

Meeting her was a true blessing.
Everyone who’s met Edie says the same thing— she had a charm for making you feel like family. She also had a special glow that will always stay with me. I hope I can radiate with as much love and joy as she did. What a life she lived.

2. Magnus Hirschfeld

Dubbed the “Einstein of sex,” the German physician founded the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee in 1897 which was the 1st recorded LGBT rights group in history! He also pioneered the 1st gender reassignment surgery. The Nazis later destroyed his institute.

A week ago, 228 Democrats led by @SpeakerPelosi voted to protect my #lesbian family from discrimination.
Only 8 GOP voted for the #EqualityAct.
That was one of 250 initiatives the Democrats have passed this year.
Last week I wrote about what Democrats and GOP said in the debate over whether LGBTQ people deserve civil rights. It went about as you'd expect.

#EqualityAct Vote Makes History…
While Democrats were doing the work of getting the #EqualityAct to the floor, the #GOP was lying about LGBTQ people and about what the bill entails.

Conservatives align against Equality Act…

@womensmarch Since you're still lying about women's concerns about the #EqualityAct, let me clarify: As currently written, Equality Act guts women's sex-based protections by redefining sex to include sex stereotypes, "mannerisms," and gender identity (aka "sex stereotypes 2.0").
@womensmarch When the law can't "see" sex--like when #EqualityAct equates sex, gender identity, sex stereotypes, and mannerisms--the law can't be used to fight sexism. What feminists are asking is that the law protect transgender people AS transgender people, AND protect women as a sex class
@womensmarch This is, FYI, what so-called "TERFs" get tarred and feathered for saying: We want trans people to be protected from violence, discrimination, and harassment. We also know that sex matters. We want to protect the rights of women and girls, too.

👹8 @GOP RINOS join @HouseDemocrats & Pass All-Out Assault on Faith👹

Today is a historic, monumental day in Congress. For the first time, we have passed comprehensive legislation that would extend federal civil rights protections to the LGBT community.
We cannot let this moment pass without recognizing the enormous significance of what it means for the House of Representatives to make clear that we stand with the LGBT community, and will fight for them. These protections have been too long delayed, but they will not be denied.
We won the fight in the House today, and we will continue until we see these protections become law. #EqualityAct

Today the House votes on whether I deserve the same civil rights as you.

It's not expected to pass.
I love when straight people parse my civil rights for me.

If the #EqualityAct passes the House and does not pass the Senate--and not ONE Republican in Congress supports it nor do all Democrats--that means it doesn't pass.

Having people vote on your right to be equal is awful.
Also, every queer and trans person in America has the right to be furious.

My wife lost a teaching position over being gay. Everyone I know has been threatened with losing their jobs for being gay. I couldn't get a mortgage with my wife because we were gay. The list is long.

Tomorrow the House of Representatives will vote on the #EqualityAct, and for the first time go on the record about whether they support protections from discrimination for LGBTQ people. Call your reps and make sure they'll be on the right side of history:…
We don't want to live in a country where people can't participate fully in public life because of our gender, sexual orientation, race, or religion. Tell Congress that a vote on the Equality Act is a vote on the kind of country we want to be.…
The fight didn't end with marriage. Nearly 2/3 of LGBTQ Americans report experiencing discrimination at work, in housing, in public spaces.
Tomorrow, Congress can take us closer to true, lived equality.…

Religious freedom & gay rights are always pitted against each other, but I'm beginning to see new reconciliations. Can we enhance both? Someone passed along this article from a Stanford undergraduate Christian journal (yes this exists!) as a conversation starter. cc @DouthatNYT
Note some of the proposed Republican amendments to the #EqualityAct aimed at expanding religious exemptions. And in the case of @DrPaulGosar's amendment, adding protections against political discrimination.…
I'm skeptical about these, but there is a conversation here to advance. Even though I'm gay, I'm more concerned about protecting religious freedom these days. The left has become out-of-control about imposing their views on gender etc. and not respecting religious differences.

For 2yrs Trump's DOJ has actively fought lesbian & gay employment discrimination cases, even when the lower courts have found in favor of lesbian & gay plaintiffs on the clearly delineated basis of Title VII.
These cases & the trans military ban make the #EqualityAct imperative.
I've been writing about this Trump DOJ issue for 2yrs. It's highly unlikely, given Gorsuch's and Kavanaugh's anti-gay stances that the #SCOTUS will find for #LGBT plaintiffs. But at least in hearing the cases, the issue of how unequal LGBT are is raised.…
This #SCOTUS case is critical because most Americans aren't even aware of the breadth of discrimination against #LGBT people as I explained here in this news story:

New studies show fewer Americans think LGBT people face discrimination…
