When you are a rural samurai in need of a proper entrance gate for your house and gardens, but you can not afford to build one cooler than your
neighbor's thatched one: grow it by planting Yew Pines (Podocarpus macrophyllus). With minimal care they will live for many centuries.

Another popular form of living gate in central and northern Japan is the "Monkaburi", usually a Japanese Black Pine (黒松). You can grow them from scratch or buy from specialist gardeners.
A fully grown "Monkaburi" can easily go for $20,000 on the market, even a young one can go for up to a $1000 depending on size and shape, making growing a few a very decent investment or a good gift for your future grandchildren.
Here is a nice example of a Podocarpus macrophyllus gate that is almost 400 years old. Could do with a bit of trimming. It is a very large one.

Here's a very rare example of Japanese medieval shop architecture: Buchoutzukuri. The outer walls of the store front are divided in two parts, one which is raised and attached to the eaves, the other which is lowered and becomes a bench on which to display goods. #GoodUrbanism
Once common in Kyoto and western Japan with whole streets dedicated to this kind of buildings, they are now so rare you'll be lucky to find even two next to each other in the same town. When this painting was made in 1615 they were already on the way out. But what clever idea!
The owners of the store would live in the same building, and only a small part of the street front room would be used as actual store space, the rest was devoted to workshop, storage, living area, perhaps even an indoor garden. An idea worth copying for dormant high streets?

Handmade concrete floors. Almost everywhere in the world you will find the most basic of floor materials, lime and earth, mixed, pounded, and watered to create a robust, long lasting, sustainable flooring. In Japan these floors are called "tataki" (三和土).
The floors are traditionally used in entrances, on covered walkways, drive ways, stables, dirt rooms, kitchens, etc. They can range from the very austere and relatively polished...
...to the old and rustic, with generations of wear and tear, but charmingly simple and obviously well loved and well maintained.

I spent the weekend in the country looking at traditional Japanese pillar-to-stone foundations, the no concrete no metal lowtech (sustainable) method of building earthquake resistant homes. I looked primarily at pre-1923 vernacular home, but also some temples, shrines, gates etc.
Traditionally the building was never anchored to the ground, but rather remained free floating on top of the foundation stones. A fantastic natural seismic insulator: the house can move around a bit but when the shaking stops the house will settle on its feet with no damage.
These days this construction method is rare, there is no money in construction in this simple way so little effort has been made to make it viable to modern building codes. Some new constructions are made though, often with perfectly flat, polished stones.

Rural areas in US tend to have higher rates of uninsured. Higher unemployment AND fewer jobs that offer health insurance. Not one presidential candidate has offered a solution to this and not one journalist has pushed them to offer one.
2. 20% of the US population lives in a rural area, but only about 10% of the nation’s physicians are located in these types of communities. The physical isolation of rural areas contributes to worse outcomes in cases of injury and acute health episodes.
3. That myocardial infarction you have on the streets of Brooklyn is likely to be eminently survivable, but that same infarction that happens in a rural community may very well not be survivable because even by air 🚁 transport you’re more than an hour away from a stroke center.

Over the weekend @desmoinesdem published my article about reaching #rural voters and it spurred some outstanding discussions. One thing I hear a lot from people who did not grow up in #Iowa is their discomfort with Iowans’ emphasis on how long their families have lived in Iowa.
They often see this as Iowans setting narrow parameters on who is a “real Iowan” and who is not. This is not the case at all and glosses over a fundamental misunderstanding of why my family’s Iowa longevity matters.
In the last 100 years rural America lost over 50% of its population. During the Great Depression, 1/3 of all farmers lost their farms. Most families never returned.
