The Senate Judiciary Committee is set to vote today on Jeffrey Rosen's nomination to be the next deputy attorney general, replacing DAG Rod Rosenstein. Rosenstein, who has been perhaps the most influential #2 at DOJ in modern history, has said his official last day is May 11
Rosen is an official at the Dept. of Transportation. He's a longtime attorney (he used to work with AG Bill Barr), but has never been a prosecutor or served at DOJ. Dems have concerns about that, as well as his expressed conservative leanings on issues incl. healthcare, environ.
Rod Rosenstein has served as deputy attorney general for two years, oversaw the Mueller investigation, was in the news all the time, and certain members of Congress who I shall not name are still saying "Rosen-steen" smh
Before the committee vote, Dems are hammering hard on Jeff Rosen's lack of DOJ experience. Durbin appears to compare the situation to Matthew Petersen's confirmation hearing, when the DC federal court nominee faltered when asked Qs about basic legal processes (he withdrew)
The Senate Judiciary Committee has voted along party lines, 12-10, to approve Jeffrey Rosen's nomination for deputy attorney general. He'll now go before the full Senate.
The Senate Judiciary Committee also voted out four judicial nominees:
- Jeffrey Brown, SD-TX: 12-10
- Robert Colville, WD-PA: 14-8 (several Rs voted no and Ds voted yes)
- Stephanie Haines, WD-PA: 21-1
- Brantley Starr, ND-TX: 12-10
From Senate Judiciary Committee's comms director, the tally for Colville's nomination changed later:
