The BJP (the ruling party) is the political wing of the RSS, a paramilitary founded in 1925 & modeled after the European fascist movements. VHP is the RSS's religious wing.

In 2005, U.S. State Dept named RSS as “extremist” group “implicated in incidents of violence and discrimination against Christians and Muslims.”
