Proponents of private pay health care often claim that countries with multi-payer health care systems (aka private pay + public pay) out-perform Canada 🇨🇦, but keep costs low and still cover everybody equitably. Sounds amazing. Is it true? Not quite. A #BetterMedicare 🧵/1
Like health care systems everywhere right now, Canada’s is struggling. No country is emerging from the pandemic unscathed - whether they have single- or multi- payer health care systems. /2
But we need to be cautious about drawing conclusions from health care systems in other countries. Each country must take into account the legacy of its history, its culture, its politics, and the values of its people. What works in one country may not work in another. /3

On this day, 60 years ago, #Medicare was born in Saskatchewan under the leadership of Premier Tommy Douglas, making it the first universal, comprehensive, single-payer insurance system in North America. A🧵
The decision was met with fierce opposition from the media, doctors, and medical organizations, including the CPSS, CMA, and AMA. It also led to the infamous doctor's strike that lasted 23 days.…
The federal government followed Saskatchewan’s example and passed the Medical Care Act in 1966. Within 6 years, all provinces and territories had universal health care.

A hot take that shouldn’t be a hot take:

Simply raising the #OW and #ODSP rates isn’t good enough.
Some thoughts:
1) If raising the rates is an interim measure towards a #UBI #GLBI, fine. But #OW and #ODSP are riddled with barriers and were not meant to create a living wage.
What do I mean? Well the #OW Act of 1997 defines ‘assistance’ as “life stabilization assistance and basic financial assistance” - no matter how you look at it, stabilization =/= thriving, living, equitable. It’s an interim fix to a structural failure.

As someone who opposes Islamophobia, why should I vote strategically for a party that drafted a dog-whistle bill around it or that voted for it, over the NDP who didn't?

As someone who supports labour organizing, why would I vote strategically for a party who doesn't want to strengthen labour laws to support workers during strikes and lockouts, when the NDP does?

As someone who wants trade deals that are good for Canada and Canadian workers and don't contain harmful ISDs and respect our sovereignty, why would I vote strategically for any party who undermines that? #trade #cdnecon #Elxn2021

@Scribulatora's post about #Pharmacare is baloney

Here's why:

First, the Hoskin's report that Liberals commissioned, says that there should be a Bill for Pharmacare passed BY January 2022. Bills pass 3 readings in the HoC before going to the Senate, they tabled NOTHING! (1/9)
Also, in the 2019 election, Liberals promised us Pharmacare and incumbent MP Patty Hajdu, just 3 MONTHS later, began walking back this promise in the media. (2/9)

#PromiseMadePromiseBroken #Elxn44 #ThunderBay
Add to that, in incumbent Chrystia Freeland's 2021 Budget, the Liberals allocated NOTHING NEW for Pharmacare!

And no Liberals, them topping up PEIs existing program, amounts to $54/person is NOT Pharmacare. It's a carrot to give you hope.

synthetic drugs are very profitable; we got too poor in a place that was getting wealthier by the day. ImageImage
the Poisoning Massacre is similarly an economic crisis. in fact it is the same one and will not be solved entirely through #SafeSupply. it will be mitigated, but the underlying causes will remain. and will return. its more than a housing crisis.
we got too poor.

in 2015-16, basic social assistance in BC was $610/mth and disability was $906/mth.

the shelter rate, as ever, was $375/mth…

Official Opposition leader @AndreaHorwath: For months Ford picked a fight with teachers and ignored the concerns of parents & students opposed to his classroom cuts. Now that we’re on the verge of school closures is Ford ready to show some leadership & reverse his reckless cuts?
@AndreaHorwath Horwath: What parents see:
• a Premier who spent months calling teachers “thugs”
• a Minister of Education who literally delayed bargaining so he could hold a press conference about the lack of bargaining.
• a govt still defending classroom cuts. #onted #onpoli
@AndreaHorwath Horwath: For months Ford insisted he was on the side of parents and he claimed they supported the cuts that now threaten to close schools all over Ontario. Why would he say that when he knew his own consultation showed the opposite? #onpoli #onted

Who else will be at the #YVR community dialogue session on national pharmacare tonight? 🙋🏻
Two years ago I attended the public consultation for federal disability legislation. Even though it took a long-ass time for the Accessible Canada Act to be proposed afterward, the consultation itself was one of the most memorable and edifying events I've ever attended.
That consultation—and the one tonight—never would have happened under the Conservatives. Every day I'm grateful that Harper's not PM anymore. The prospect of being back under the Cons terrifies me, but it's a real possibility 'cause Trudeau didn't follow through on #ERRE.
