Gynecologic oncologists diagnose, surgically treat and then prescribe chemotherapy for their own cancer patients as a self-contained unit 2/
This is amazing for patients as the care is holistic but it results in infrastructure needs that are different from other surgical and medical oncologists 3/
Gynecologic oncologists (42% women; 70% women fellows) are on track to be a majority woman surgical subfield 4/
We report to non-surgeon, non-oncologists as most Ob/gyn chairs are male (80%) and most are obstetricians (~70%) 5/
Rethinking the placement and reporting structures of gyn oncologists within the matrix cancer center is needed to support the doctors so that the patients with gyn cancers (#gyncsm) receive best care 6/6

Last year, I made myself a haku lei (Hawaiian flower crown) for our white coat ceremony, and some classmates were interested, so I had the idea to have a workshop to teach them, and then I thought "how great would it be if we made them for patients??"
So I started looking into how to make this happen, and I found @MariaBaggstrom, who, among MANY other things, is the Oncology Interest Group faculty advisor. Talk about an amazing mentor and sponsor! She helped to connect me to the relevant parties and advised me throughout
my planning, and we were able to put on @WUSTLmed's very first #HappyHakuLei making workshop! I taught about 50 people how to make a haku lei, and then delivered the finished product to #gynecologic #oncology patients at @SitemanCenter the next day

According to our new survey by @ANSIRH @acog @IbisRH & @CPMCinSF, while more OB/GYNs are providing abortions than a decade ago, 72% had a patient who wanted an abortion in the past year, however only 24% were willing and able to provide it.

Our survey also asked which abortion methods OB/GYNs offer. Fewer OB/GYNs offered medication abortion, and this is likely due to the FDA regulations requiring clinicians to dispense medication abortion in their clinics. journals.lww.com/greenjournal/A…
In our survey, OB/GYNs said the would provide medication abortion if the FDA would allow them to provide it via prescription. At the moment, mifepristone (medication abortion) can only be dispensed at a hospital, clinic, or doctor's office, and not via prescription at a pharmacy.

This company has not begun #ClinicalTrials. As my institution's #cancer center head very accurately said, "History is littered with claims made on the basis of test tube-based or animal studies that had absolutely no transferability into human disease" (2)
#Cancer is not 1 disease. It's not 50 diseases. "Cancer" is a umbrella term we give to an unknown number of different diseases, because they have common characteristics. Yet this man says "We believe we will offer in a year's time a complete cure for cancer" (3)

I hear the March for Life's theme this year is being anti-abortion is pro-science. As a scientist, researcher, and practicing ob/gyn, this confounds me. Anti-abortion laws and regulations are routinely enacted without regard for evidence-based research.

I am deeply disappointed to hear that the Supreme Court has declined to hear a challenge to Arkansas' restrictive medication abortion law. Medication abortion is very safe; the requirements are medically unnecessary and designed to effectively ban it. nbcnews.com/politics/supre…
Medication abortion is extremely safe, and patients can safely administer it with instructions. (journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…)

Medication abortion via telemedicine is as safe as in-clinic provision. (journals.lww.com/greenjournal/F…)
The goal of the Arkansas law is to effectively ban medication abortion by requiring doctors to contract with other doctors who have admitting privileges at hospitals, but of course, they can’t find other doctors who are willing. This is medically unnecessary and a de facto ban.
