I am angry. This company trying to develop a #cancer treatment is behaving so outrageously that I literally can't believe it. Have you seen/heard about this? abc11.com/health/israeli… (1)
This company has not begun #ClinicalTrials. As my institution's #cancer center head very accurately said, "History is littered with claims made on the basis of test tube-based or animal studies that had absolutely no transferability into human disease" (2)
#Cancer is not 1 disease. It's not 50 diseases. "Cancer" is a umbrella term we give to an unknown number of different diseases, because they have common characteristics. Yet this man says "We believe we will offer in a year's time a complete cure for cancer" (3)
"This man" aebi-bio.com/content/dan-d-… possesses a MBA from my alma mater, but apparently he never learned biology, history, or humility. He has learned, however, how to raise patient hopes over what Duke University rightly called a scientific "non-story." (4)
Whatever his company has, it isn't a cure for #cancer. At best it will ammeliorate 1 type of cancer to some extent. But rather than saying that,he says, "Our cancer cure will be effective from day 1, will last a duration of a few weeks & will have no or minimal side-effects" (5)
Which is (sorry, but there's not other word that fits) utter bullshit. Which brings me to my next point. Why are the media reporting this? This is, as Duke University said, a "non-story" and to have widespread coverage is doing nothing but spreading the bullshit (6)
This is not harmless. Rather, this is actively harmful. I am upset about the company's behavior; I consider the chairman of the board to be a conman; & I am furious that the media is spreading his harm. (end) cc @onthemedia
Addendum: Lots of people have pointed out that many companies engage in hype. I understand. There’s just something about the sheer egregiousness of this company’s claims that angers me.
