If you weren’t raised in a conservative religious community, you will never understand how deep the brainwashing goes, how normal things seem to those raised inside that secular society views as absurd.
I was raised Catholic. 12 years of Catholic school. My junior year we had a mandatory 2 semester course called “Morality” where we were taught straight up lies about the effects of birth control & the effectiveness of condoms among other lessons on praying the gay away & such.
I only had friends who went to Catholic school. I was totally confined to that community. I had no idea how bizarre & incorrect things were that I was taught until college. This likely didn’t happen for my friends who went on to Catholic universities...
I still have moments in conversations w/ friends where I mention something about my childhood/adolescence & then realize by the look on ppl’s faces that a thing I thought of as normal or quirky was bizarre, upsetting or disturbing to folks raised in non-religious communities.
